Will any of you be in Sarasota next week for the state series? It should be a fun week with some really good matchups in store.
If you're coming, bring a little rain with you. ...not enough to delay any games mind you. ...just enough to help green-up my lawn. (...looks like mown hay...)
Good luck to all the teams playing in what has been described as one of the best state high school tournaments, in any sport, anywhere in the country.
(The following is an exerpt from USA Today, May, 2005)

Making a case for best prep tournaments
By Ray Glier, Special for USA TODAY
Before Chipper Jones earned a World Series ring, before Dan Gable and Herb Brooks and Marion Jones hit Olympic gold, before Darrell Griffith was Dr. Dunkenstein and Alex Rodriguez was A-Rod, they took star turns on the biggest stages in high school sports.
In baseball, that's the Florida state tournament in Sarasota (where Jones was the losing pitcher in baseball's 1990 final and Rodriguez won it all two years later). In boys' basketball, it's Kentucky's all-comers championship (where Griffith wrote a 1975 prelude to his and Louisville's 1980 NCAA title). In hockey, it's St. Paul (where a still-in-skates Brooks fired home two goals to help win a title in 1955).
Or so we submit.
Weighing caliber of competition, star power and atmosphere, USA TODAY selected the best state championship events in seven sports — football, boys' and girls' basketball, baseball, hockey, wrestling and track and field. There's room for argument, of course. The picks are selective, not scientific. Our cases:
Florida (baseball)
Why it's special: It's a six-day tournament at the spring training facility of the Cincinnati Reds in Sarasota, which means a terrific venue for fans and teams. The top 24 teams in the state gather for semifinals and finals in the six classifications. Every seat in Ed Smith Stadium (7,500) has a seatback for comfort and full fare is available in the concession stands. Major league and college scouts also flock to the tournament, which was held from 1997 to 2004 at Legends Field in Tampa. The 2005 event (May 23-28) will be the 84th year of the state tournament.
Magic moments: Ron Scott, who went on to play for the University of Florida, pitched a no-hitter in the 1989 Class 6A state championship game over a Jacksonville Englewood team with nine players who signed with Division I schools. ... Westminster Christian of Miami won three consecutive Class 2A titles from 1996 to 1998. Westminster also won a title in 1992 with Alex Rodriguez and Mets first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz. In 1996, Westminster was 35-0 and had not allowed more than three runs in a game. In the state tournament final, Liberty scored six runs in the first inning, but Westminster rallied for a 10-6 win.
