Whats real "sport"?

Going 110% at all times?
Not taking a play off?
Beating a competitor?
Coaching and game plans?
years of honing skills?
4 hours of complete focus?
Physical conditioning in and out of season?

Sounds like if you fulfill those requirements you are participating in an athletic event. I'm not a NASCAR fan but those guys are athletes IMHO where failure is not an option.

If we use the TR criteria maybe baseball should be played in the rain and games not be suspended.

That seemed pretty crazy yesterday for the race (Daytona 500) to be stopped more than once for the pothole repairs. I was cheering on "my" driver, Clint Bowyer in the Cheerios car, who led quite a few laps toward the end of the race. (I do some work on the Cheerios Racing website.)

It is kind of interesting to watch how the team concept comes into play, especially toward the end of the race. Sometimes when the cars get all jammed up together because of caution laps and restarts, the cars in 4th, 5th, 6th place can't find an opening to pass the leaders, but a teammate may make it up close enough to push them past the pack. There were some white knuckle maneuvers like that toward the end.

My driver Clint came in 4th after some final-lap lead changes. That's better than his 2007 Daytona 500 finish, which they showed during one of the delays: He crossed the finish line upside down and on fire.

Mom, that was the race that got me hooked. Living in the south, I'm around NASCAR fans every day, but had never took a serious interest. I agreed to go to a buddy's house to watch that race, and it was amazing. Watching Clint Boyer slide across the finish line upside down and on fire was the most exciting thing I had ever seen live on TV. Been an avid fan since.
If you ever get a chance. Go to a nascar track when they are having a Petty ride along session if you really want to know what type of competitors these guys are. I had the chance to take 3 laps at 165 MPH around Daytona and cannot explain the experience. The G force in the turn is amazing. To do this for 200 laps at 190 MPH these people are real atheletes.

I have experienced, on several occasions, extended delays while crews filled in holes on the mound and in the base lines, that opened and/or became worse during the course of a game, usually after a rain or during a sprinkle that was not severe enough to call the game.
Nascar is the most watched "sport" on TV.
You really can't appreciate it until you see it live. The TV gives it no justice, and watching on TV exciting. There is NOTHING like it, nothing at all. JMO.
And if you think taligating is big at football games, these races are events.
These guys are athletes. I enjoyed the articles. They have more team mentality than most pro players who play on teams and get paid millions.
Alot of people enjoy Nascar. I find it very boring. I went to a race and will never go back. I cant sit through one lap watching on tv. To each his own. There are some sports I question wether or not it takes an athlete to excell at. Yard darts? Corn ball? Golf? Bowling? Nascar? Does it take skill? Of course it takes skill to be good at them. Does it take an athletic person to be good at them?

I also don't watch NASCAR, or any car racing. I also don't watch Hockey. To me, that doesn't change the fact that they are a sport and are very popular with other people.

Is John Kruk or David Wells and athletic person? If you want to question other sports, be sure to question baseball as well.

One of the few things I don't like about this site is the way s****r is blanked out. It reminds me of all the baseball people I've known that are afraid of s****r stealing their fields, or stealing their players, or stealing their volunteers, or stealing their limelight. If it has to do with athletics, s****r is far more of a sport than baseball.

That said, baseball is my favorite sport. I just don't find the need to dislike or blank out other sports simply because they compete with my favorite one.
I love Nascar as I do most sports. There has always been that question if you could call a driver an athlete or not. In today's world they are as they must work out to keep that edge over the driver who does not. And yes the over the wall crew members are athletes who do intense training. But if you want to know IMO who the top atheltes are then this is it, this requires more skill than any other sport, period and if you have not ever been on one, THEN DON'T TALK TO ME ABOUT IT!

Do real sports get called off due to rain? Smile Just something to think about. Every sport has it's Achilles heel.

I love the interviews. "My BoJangles STP Mobil One Goodyear Pontiac was a little loose in turn 1 but then the boys in the Pit got some wedge going and it got real tight going in and came out loose but Jimmy Bob made a great decision to change some rubber on the outside and the BoJangles STP Mobil One Goodyear Pontiac found the right groove for me."
I enjoy the last 25-30 laps of Nascar.

After the final pothole delay yesterday they had 30 or so laps to go and to me it was very exciting, especially the finish when Dale Earnhardt Jr jumped out and tried to steal the show - he's an excellent driver....

That's the only part of the race I watched.

It's definitely not a sport in the sense that most want to try and compare it to football, baseball or basketball. Too many mechanical components involved and that's why it's referred to as a Motor Sport.

Coach May you kill me!
TR,

You wanna stir it up?

Talk about a game that is not a sport...try GOLF...

"Sssshhhhhh! Everybody be quite and he needs to concentrate while trying to hit a ball that is not moving."

...LOL!!!!!!

Sure, it takes some athletic skill to hit a golf ball hundreds of yards, but what's so sporting about golf? You can have just as much excitement playing a monopoly game...and it will be just as competitive...but, golf is certainly not a sport...
NASCAR is a sport, not one I follow closely. Then again, I don't follow rhythmic gymnastics or synchronized swimming either.

My inlaws knew everything about it, and were devastated when Dale Earnhart died. In fact, we called and checked up on them that evening, and drove up to them a few days later! Seriously, they were that upset.

imo, the best thing about this year's Daytona were the announcers. Think they wanted Jr to win?
