If a batter swings & misses at a third strike and the ball hits him, is the ball dead? I know he is out (MLR 6.05 item f), but if less than 2 outs, and a runner on third, if the ball bounces away from the cather when it hits the batter, can R3 score?
I believe the ball is dead, but can't find it in the rules.

Interestingly, there was a recent MLB game where this call was prominently missed. Apparently the HPU didn't see it well and the field umps thought it hit off the catcher's mitt, but replays indicated it hit off the batter's back shin. It resulted in a game winning rally for the Dodgers.

On the other hand, I remember UVA wriggling out of a jam in Omaha this year (or maybe it was in the Super Regionals, but it was one of the games on TV) when Tyler Wilson struck out a lefty batter with a slider that then struck him above his left knee and bounced away. Properly recorded as an out, dead ball, all runners sent back, and UVA eventually escaped with no runs in the inning.
We had a similar situation in a close game the other night. RH hitter and LHP. LHP throws a slider down and in to hitter and gets a full swing with the ball hitting the hitter's leg and bouncing toward a dugout. Runner on 3rd trotted home. Umpire allows runner to score. I argued that it was a dead ball and the runner should be sent back to 3rd and he told me that I did not know the rules. We ended up losing by two to a good team.

Not trying to defend the umpire, but he agreed the ball hit the batter on the leg? If so, why didn't you protest?
