The Illinois High School Baseball Coaches Association has been one of the more active coaches associations in the nation. A big week-end is when they host their annual coach's clinic drawing over 600 coaches each year, highlighted in the evening with the prestigious Hall of Fame Banquet. But most the organization's efforts are done to help support the kids. The IHSBCA organizes the high school summer league, help sponsor and support the Harvey Foster showcase camps, which helps young players get recruited to college. The organization produces a summer prospect list to help players get noticed. Most recently the IHSBCA organized an annual scholarship to assist some players going on to play at the college level. The IHSBCA is taking on one new project we hope every school in the state participates.
The IHSBCA is going to support a campaign that started at Naperville Central HS called Strike out Cancer. Cancer has touched the lives of many people including close members of our baseball families. You first think of Jack Kaiser from Oak Park, the most respected coach and the coach with the most wins in the history of Illinois high school baseball. Just a few years ago Jack lost his battle with cancer; he fought to the very end when he was coaching with the enthusiasm of a rookie coach at age 70.
With the average roster of 20 players or more and then include the sophomore and freshman team, there is probably not a team in the state that has not recently been effected by cancer be that a coach, player, parent, or sibling. The donations can be made by just the coach, include the team, or the entire baseball family. Every little bit of support will add up state wide campaign.
Because the IHSBCA association is focused on the kids, all money raised will go to sending children with cancer to camp in the summer. For one week we can pinch hit for the cancer and substitute with a week of joy for children stricken with this terrible disease.
