I heard this today and it was new to me - sorry for my ignorance. A strike is called when the ball is over the plate and is between the letters and knees - meaning it is a "different" strike zone dependent on if the batter is way up in the box, in the middle or in the very back of the box. Can someone clarify the rule for me. Thanks

quote:
The strike zone is that space over home plate between the batter's midpoint and the hollow beneath his kneecap as he begins to take his typical swing. The midpoint is 1/2 way between the top of his shoulders and the top of his uniform pants. (OBR 2.00).

All correct of course..... the only dependent issue of the strike zone is the batters height.....

a knee high pitch on a 5'6" batter is too low to call on a 6'4" batter....

and that, my friends, is where an umpire is made... that is where the act of calling balls and strikes becomes the art of calling balls and strikes....
