I need clarification on the substitution rule.

Rick is the 9th batter playing LF. I have a sub (Trevor) to get into the game. I put Trevor in for Rick at the top of the inning. Rick goes to the dugout and Trevor goes to LF. At the bottom of the inning, I bring Rick back out to bat in his original spot and want to move Trevor (who hasn't batted yet) to the 6th batting position to take Hayden's batting spot. Is this a legal substitution?

Unless you play in a league with free substitutions this is not a legal move. Once a player enters the game offensively or defensively they are glued to that lineup position until they have no reentry left.

Most reentry rules work like this - each starter has one reentry at anytime during the game as long as they come back into the spot they left in the lineup. Subs do not have a reentry so if you take one out then they are done for the game.

In your case Trevor is glued to the 9th spot once he took the field. Rick may reenter but only for Trevor and that means Trevor is done for the game. Hayden can come out and reenter (provided he started the game) but Trevor cannot be that sub in that spot.

Hope that makes sense. Plus we do have an umpire forum just for questions like this. We got some great umpires who can probably give you a better explanation than what I just did. By the way - welcome to the site.

It's not even legal in the LL regular season (based on when I coached five years ago) . What level of ball are you talking about?
Thank you so much. I had a Little League coach who tried to pull this on me at a game the other night and said his umpires had been allowing this. Our league plays by high school rules with a few exceptions. But I just wanted to make sure I made the right call by not allowing him to do this. Thanks again.

I thought this was an illegal substitution but I had a coach argue that he could move his substitute around in the lineup. Thanks for your help.
