I am looking for some advice...I have looked for similar questions and maybe Im not searching the right words...but, here is my question.

My son is entering his Junior season and my question pertains to summer ball. Our High school team has played together the last few years we had an 18U and 16U teams. Last year as a Sophmore RHP played with the older team and gained some valueable experience.

This year we will graduate 9 seniors, most of them will be starters...we have approximately 9 Juniors who will likely start next year give or take one here and there.

This is the plan for summer, the seniors will go there way and find a summer league to play in..they have several who will play college ball somewhere. The juniors will be coached by the high school coach along with a couple of underclassmen to try and get a team ready to play next year.

My problem is I think this summer is the most important as far as showcases and trying to find a good summer team to play on.

Should I worry about upsetting the high school coach and keeping my son off that team to pursue other avenues...I feel like my sons future is more important than playing on the other team. I feel like he will see more exposure playing in a bigger league. Our high school summer team will not play outside of this area. Im being selfish as far as this is concerned...isnt it time to be selfish? Looking for some opinions please?!?!?!

No expert since my son is a freshman--but you asked for opinions. I know in my area high school summer teams play weekdays so many travel programs play weekend tournaments only or have extra players to fill in during weekdays. If your lucky enough to find a great travel coach like I have, he doesn't want to interfer with high school baseball (he has a son on the team who is a sophomore). He doesn't make us make a choice, he doesn't want conflict with the high school. We play tournaments all summer 2 Perfect Game Showcase Events which I beleive are the most important for exposure--expecially at your son's age. If your coach doesn't understand that your son has to get out of town to see how he stachs up at these events then he isn't much of a coach and is not looking out for what's best for your son--in my opinion. Best of luck with his high school team and hope you can find a great travel coach like I did who cares more about the kids then his ego.
Don't just start going to showcases to see if you're son is discovered unless your son is the head turning stud. Make a list of schools that fit his academic needs that would be a good place to play baseball. Then find out where they will be scouting looking for players. It may be Perfect Game. It may be someplace else.

For example, if my son is looking to play college ball in New England I'd look at College Select over PG. If it's a particular conference on the east coast one of the academies in our area runs showcases for some of the conferences. If he wants to attend a top academic college there's Head First.

Your son may be able to play for his school summer team and hit a select few showcases. What you need is a plan.

Note: My son is doing a Perfect Game 17U event as a sophomore to experience how big and bad the world can be.
