just out of curiosity... are most summer assigments made in the fall or are there assignment made in spring also. Also I notice that a number of the websites have contact pages if a player is interested, of course needing the coaches blessing. Is it usual or unusual for players to have to apply for a spot on a team if they are really interested.
justamom - I wondered about this too, as many posters said their sons were assigned in the fall. My JUCO son's coach said they don't make assignments in the fall. He said the fall was used for evaluation. Then come spring, assignments were made. They appear to place all of their kids that want to be in a collegiate league, so I guess it works for them. However, I don't know if this is the minority (schools placing in the spring)?

Nearly all the Cape teams will have rosters filled in the Fall and many other leagues and teams strive to do the same.
Even when that occurs, many roster spots open in the Spring due to injury, grades, overwork during the college season, and others. If the college coach works hard at it and has good connections, they certainly can get many players placed during the Spring.
Thank you for the answers. I was beginning to worry a little. As a freshman JUCO you are working hard to earn a spot and so I was not sure how it worked. I do understand the cape league is filled in the fall, but after looking through the sites there seems to be a fair amount of leagues for the summer, so I wondered if they all filled in the fall.

Do you know if the players are intersted in any certain league if they should fill the form out on the websites or just take a chance and wait.

I am of the philosophy that you need to consult wiht your coach (by you , I mean the player) and see what his preference is and then go from there. For all you know he may tell you to forget about it or he has something in mind.
Justamom - you're reading my mind! After researching, I have two favorite leagues - the CICL and Valley. However, when I spoke at the beginning of the semester with son's coach, he mentioned another league as a possibility. For us, I think we're going to rely on his experience in the placement, but I'll be checking out the replies here. Where is your son in JUCO at? You can PM if you prefer.
justamom,

lafmom started a thread this past summer on summer leagues in the general forum. It had some very useful information posted in it. It prompted me to call my son's assistant coach. He said they generally place their kids in summer leagues in the fall. He also said it usually took a little longer to place freshman. He said he could generally place them in a league but he could not assure them where.

Ann- one of my son's teammates, Jesse Jordan, pitched there last year. I believe Jesse is returning this year. What a great young man...and a very good pitcher.
Question. I don't know nearly as much about this subject as I should. You guys (figuratively, since some of our most knowlegable posters are ladies) know a lot more about this than I do, so here goes.

As I understand things to be, many 4-year schools will use the promise of a summer league team placement as a recruiting inducement to help obtain quality players. As a result of this, it has apparently become more difficult for juco players to find college summer league teams. Of course, I don't know how difficult it is for most good juco players to get into a quality college summer leagues anyway, but from what I've heard this has become more difficult over the last few years. Is that accurate? I'd love to learn some more about this topic.
One of the main problems that JUCO players have is that they are not allowed (by NCAA recruiting rules) to play on a summer team coached by a Div. 1 or Div. 2 coach. Many, if not most, of the summer teams are coached by D1 or D2 assistant coaches. This limits the number of teams that would be allowed to take JUCO players.
