Just got back from four weeks of baseball trip. Thought this would be a good time to start a thread about summer moments.
We spent two weeks in Atlanta at WWBA and my youngest son played in USSSA 8U World Series (One on each end of Atlanta for a week). Then went to Fort Myers for 17U BCS and 16U BCS with a trip to Keys for the weekend in between. Then back to UNC Chapel Hill for the weekend. Good to be home. My son played on 8 different teams with three different organizations this summer. Met a lot of great players and parents. Reminded me how great the baseball community is.

Now for the bragging: My youngest son's team finished 8th out of 32 teams. Won three games pitching.
My middle son hit 91 at 16U BCS and UNC Chapel Hill. Went 8/10 batting with 5 walks at UNC.
My oldest son is at Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven. Hit three run homer to win TN state Dizzy Dean.
It's been a great summer.

I miss the baseball summers but did get a chance to go to Tampa and see

lil' rz with the evil empire

Other than that it's been "lake time" with the daughters water ski team which just completed a 4-peat with State championships and now going to the 4-peat with the National title.

They make it look so easy. The two on the right I get tax deductions for........and paying dual tuition Frown

The rz1 twins

If anyone is interested here is a 4 min highlight clip of the WI State Showski tournament. My girls are in the pyramids, the 6 girl swivel line, and the 22 girl ballet line, and competed in freestyle jumping .

1. I would point any boy away from type A athletic twins girls. They hunt in a pack, take no prisoners, and keep "boy-toy" trophies of those who cross the line.

2. There's something about a 6'5" 230 athletic brother who watches over his sisters closer than his ball bag and if he's not around the "BIG brothers" on the ski team watch over all the gals like a hawk.

3. When I initially meet any of their "friends" we first bond by sharpening my axes/knives, cleaning my guns, and reloading spent ammo. As they walk out the door I say have fun and whisper to him "If you make her cry, I'll make you cry".

4. But, most important, I trust them, and know they know where to hide the bodies. Wink
RZ...I am speechless after watching that video.

I live on one of the biggest lakes in Georgia. A lake that our dear friend Krak use to lifeguard when he was a young lad many moons ago, and I've NEVER seen this done here!

Not only would I love to see HOW the pyramid starts, but I'd love to see how they END the run! Holy smoke.

Is this a college sport up north?

A little trivia.....Wi has more water ski teams than any other State in the Country. Almost every college in the State has a club team, most are ranked toward the top of their divisions Nationally.

Cabin fever in the winter brews some strange forms of entertainment when we finally step out in the Spring.

Below is a clip from the Guinness world record skiing pyramid my daughters were part of in Sept 2006. 55 degree water temp on a 50 degree day. It took 8 hours to get it up. The first eight times there was collapses and everytime it looked like Titanic just went down, 48 bobbing heads and skis littered the lake.

The event was sponsored by Evinrude and the lake was closed by the DNR. Almost 6000 lbs of skiers, over two miles of rope, and 1 18 ft boat with 3 225 hp engines. If you can imagine 24 guys sitting on a barge with 24 girls on their shoulders, all with coils of rope in their hands, the boat is gunned and the are yanked off the barge when the ropes uncoil. Then its 34 MPH of chaos wirh the girls walking across shoulders and climbing up human ladders. In about a minute the 4 top girls are 25 feet above the water and moving 34 MPH on a liquid road. These are athletes, but more important it is about TRUST and TEAMWORK. When my girls were young I felt there was a void because there was not "teamwork" portion of their lives like my sons baseball experiences, then this ski team came along and I've watched what teamwork is really about. Every practice, every show, one mental error can cause serious injury to many teammates. Growing up is about stepping out of that box and challenging yourself, and challenging others, they did that and all I can do is sir back and say "that's cool"

BTW- The pyramid comes down the same way it goes up and the 24 guys ski into shore with 24 girls standing on the front of the skis.

However, you start to wonder when you get that call the first week of college and think you have to settle a little homesickness issues but instead they say.

"Dad, we need new insurance cards and full face helmets, the guys are going to teach us how to freestyle jump.....and don't tell Mom".

And some say that I should worry about guys in their lives Big Grin

What rz isn't tellling all of you is that the career goal of virtually everyone in Cheesehead Nation who cannot play football or hockey for Bucky is to join the Tommy Bartlett Water Show in the Dells. That's why there are so many ski teams!

Biographical Note: I grew up in the Chicago area and used to go up to Madison and the Dells every fall when my dad did interviewing at UW for his company.

That pyramid is unbelievable. Thanks for posting the video of how the thing gets started! I was wondering the same thing. That is just very cool.

And I get what you are saying about girls' team sports.

As for your lovely twins, for those times when their brother is gone, you could always resort to the Charles Barkley strategy for when his own girl came of dating age. He said:

"I figure I will meet her very first date at my front door with a shotgun, and blow his head off. Word will get around."

8 days in Atlanta for me and my Son at 18U WWBA, including airfare, hotel, meals, etc -$1500

8 days in Ft Myers for 18U BCS for the whole family- $2000

Seeing my Son's team win the 18U BCS in their last tournament together- ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!

Great Memories!
Are you bragging or complaining about the cost?

Yep! I have one at home for the summer. She's going to be a senior in college. She calls college guys "boys" not men. Back when I coached 18U/G I heard stuff in the dugout that would make any 18U boys team run for cover. Competitive women/girls are far more intense than guys.

I'm pretty sure both bragging and complaining are allowed on this site! Wink

I'm bragging that the #36 ranked team (according to PG) beat the #1 ranked team in the Semis, and then went on to win the championship against another higher-ranked team.

I'm complaining (but not that much)about the cost!

Regardless, the past few Summers of travel baseball have been great times that I am going to miss, and it could not have ended on a better note!

Congrats on your BCS in Fort Meyers, From the Sparks and Cangelosi Baseball (Fall) we sure enjoyed whackn it around with your boys. Class acts and made our players better for having played your kids.
Good Luck and may your boy have a healthy career ahead.

Back at ya'!

You are very kind! You all whacked us around pretty good at Wrigley last Fall, as I recall!

My Son played against a Sparks team way back when they were 14 in the Omaha CWS tournament.

You guys have always field a top-notch group of talented kids who know how to play the game the right way!

Best of Luck in the future!

I thought that was funny but now my daughters live in a trailer court and are on a diet of Romain noodles cooked on a hot plate in the WI Dells and ski 3 shows a day. I guess you could call them "professionals" now, but, what I don't understand is if you fall during their shows you're docked pay. Maybe show skiing is ahead of its time because if baseball based its salaries on past success rates maybe we could somewhat accept the payroll structure

Just an update. The girls ski team did the 4-pete at the National tournament last week. For those who "wished them luck" or were interested, I've linked a 10 min highlight clip from the National Tournament show.
