Likes to use the arms. A basically dead lower body. A downward swing plane as a result. IMO, needs to have very large changes.

I would start with teaching him to coil. Then, teach him top hand swivel over a vertical forearm and get him to turn the triangle (keeping the elbows the same distance to contact, something I still have trouble with.)
Definitely not using his lower half. This does cause other problems. Stopping the video at the end of his swing you will also notice his head just about over his front foot at times, which is not good and a result of a few problems.

I would start with something simple to begin the correction. The hitter’s front leg timing on his load is basically a very small toe tap type of step. If he is going to take that approach, his base needs to be wider in his stance. He is so narrow to start that he is unable to use his lower half with the front foot strike that he uses. So just saying use more lower half to the hitter will not work no matter how many times it’s told to him because he is too narrow starting for the front side timing he uses. I hope that makes sense to you. IMO without that first adjustment no other adjustment will be useful to him.

Interesting responses. Thank you.

However, this is not my kid. This video was pointed out to me by on of the coaches from Game Ready. He is very proud, and I mean VERY proud of this kids swing.

He has been trying to get all the kids on the team to swing in the same fashion.

This kid has an awful swing. I don't know what level he's playing at, but if this is what he does in a game, run like HELL from Game Ready (for hitting instruction). Honestly, despite all of my disagreements with people here, we're ALL preventing against this.

NDD, myself, Wog, Sultan of Swat, and everyone else here is against this kind of hitting. It's low level and it doesn't scale.

He looks pretty good. Slight lunging that might simply result from tossing vs. live pitching.

I will look for the lunging tomorrow during live pitching.

He used to just lift his heel, we went to the full stride as a means of timing. I will watch for the heel strike first and correct if necessary.

Thanks
brushout...your son has a very solid swing.

He gets to 50/50 weight distribution on his load, nice hand, and bat angle positions.

As WapakDad2013 is seeing (and if you slow the video down)....it appears that his front foot is in a good position on the load (on a perpendicular line to the plate), however, his first move on some swings is to force the front foot open as he initiates the entire swing. You can really see it on the second swing if you slow it down. He rotates that front heel toward his back foot immediately.

It is hard for me to see from the video if only the front toe and not the entire foot is touching during load. His weight distribution appears 50/50 on his load, however, he appears to be up on the front toe. Getting that front foot on the ground may help in not rotating that front foot so much from the start. A front foot/firm front side also helps you control your lower half during the swing especially on off speed pitches.

Ideally you want to pivot around that firm front side (with that front foot opening the smallest amount possible). Hitting is about a firm front side and translation of the energy of the swing into that firm front side to generate the power. Pulling that front foot and leg open is going to impact hand path and everything else to follow. Result will be less consistent ball contact.

See this video for the general concept:

Finish is very good overall with nice balance. Some of the swings he does not finish his back hip rotation, but overall this is a very good swing.

Looks very good....keep up the reps.
