With less than 2 outs:

Ball to left field, you probably won't be able to tag up so you get off the base in case the fielder drops the ball but stay close enough that you can get back after the catch.

Ball to center: depends on where it goes, you might be able to do the above, or if it's deep enough or far enough to right, you might be able to tag up and attempt to take third.

Ball to right: Should probably tag up and at least make the fielder attempt the long throw.

Watch their outfielders and try to gauge their arms. Especially in HS and youth baseball, tagging might be a lot easier with weak arms. I always want my runners to at least look like they're going so the fielder might make an errant throw.

DO NOT make the first out at 3rd.

Here's an easy way to remember it:

Always tag up on DEEP SURE's...meaning they are a sure out, an easy catch.

For any balls hit from the LFC gap to RCF line, tag up on DEEP SURE's and DEEP POSSIBLE's. Any ball that they are sure to catch or can possibly catch. If they don't catch it, you should still be able to score.

While this is very basic, it will give you general guidelines.
