Having been around little league for sometime (I have 4 boys remember) and being a district commissioner for another youth league organization, I see my share of problems with league management. Sometimes the only thing you can do is sue to get the attention of the entrenched "league officers". I once took over concessions for a league who claimed to be bankrupt. I put in 40-50 hours per week at no charge to the league and I generated a small profit of $15,000.00 for the league which promptly took $10,000.00 and gave it to the parents of the all-star team for travel expenses. (4 of the board members had sons on the all-star team)

I was a member of a new board at another park(we took over operations by default when the old board stepped down) When we placed our first order for uniforms we were told we would have to pay off $7000.00 in debt left by the previous board. We then found out the treasurer had embezzled all the money. But through begging from city and county officials and private donors we were able to pay off the debt and get the league back on its feet.

A lot of the parents who just sign up their kids to play and drop them off do not realize how much money is involved at the big parks..in the 6 figures for most. So like I say where there is that much money involved sometimes a law suit is all you have.

Let me add one thing. If everybody would make an effort to run for an office on these boards these problems go a way. A lot of these leagues can't get enough people to run so they never turn over. The problem happens when someone on the outside gets mad about a little thing then with a little research figures out the park took in $150,000.00 in fees and concessions and asked what happened to the money. That is when things go bad fast.

I Agree that people need to volunteer to help youth organizations. I paid my dues in that environment and we never seemed to have enough help. The same few people did all the work.

What really bothers me is the line in the article where the Board made a ruling that you had to be on the board for 3 years to run for the board. Not exactly free and open elections.....
