My son is a 13 year old that is about to wrap up 8th grade. When he was playing 54/70' he was 42 for 43 in stolen bases. Good wheels but nothing off the charts. Good ability to read the pitcher but not exceptional. Willingness to get dirty and get back to the bag on pickoff attempts but not exceptional.
I had always noticed a hesitancy to aggressively attack home plate and sometimes a hesitancy to agressively slide into 2nd & 3rd. Also, he does not bust out of the box as well as he should. Nevertheless, due to his success I did not push the issue. I am not a coach and he has the typical teenaged angst towards my input anyway.
Now playing on 60/90' he has had good success but has been thrown out a few times/picked off a couple of times/been lucky that the throw was wild a few times.
He is on an exceptionally good team and there are 3 teammates that are very aggressive base runners to go along with their incredible instincts and blazing speed(2 of the 3). Therefore there is a clear disparity from my viewpoint.
I am wondering if anyone has any hot tips on improving his base running.
FWIW he is 5'7" 125lbs and also plays football which does not seem to enhance his aggressive nature on the base paths.
THX in advance for your input
