Thoughts on Varitek.

- Kind of gutless to attack a guy while wearing full catcher's gear.

- Where the hell was he and that stupid "C" on his jersey while his pitching staff was drinking beer and eating chicken all Sept.?

- He retired the day after beer was banned from the clubhouse - just sayin'

I will miss his .200 average and inability to throw anybody out

Tek was just protecting his pitcher Bronson Arroyo from Arod, who plunked Arod. Arod got fresh with Tek. Then he got beat down.

TEK was the best RS catcher since Fisk, maybe better. He had two more WS rings, anyway. Maybe this pic of Slappy and Arroyo will soothe the wounds.

Jason Varitek will never have to buy a drink in Boston.

Disclaimer: I am a Mariners fan who grew up as a Red Sox fan after adopting them after Bud Selig stole the Pilots from Seattle, so I have some conflicted thoughts.

The Derek Lowe / Jason Varitek for Heathcliff Slocumb trade was among the worst in Mariners history. It pains me to this day. OTOH, that trade solidified the C position for the Red Sox for the next 15 years.

Tek was an average bat at a position that is often manned by sub-average bats, and was a solid defender and a GREAT handler of pitchers. He deserves every accolade that comes his way.

I can take solace in the leadership he showed in Sept. 2011! I always thought the "C" was bogus for baseball and he proved it there.
It is difficult to watch players you've respected for a very long time reach the end of the road.

Tim Wakefield and Jason Veritek both reached the end this offseason. As a huge Red Sox fan, I respect them both for their many years of production.

The year of the famous trade that brought Lowe & Veritek to Boston was one of the few years in the last 20 they were selling at the deadline. I remember at the time thinking, "You know you can get good fast through this selling stuff." Too many years the sellers trade three months of production for many years of production.

Sounds like Tek will find a job with the Red Sox where he belongs.
