Last night I went to a tryout for a local travel team. When I was taking my BP session I could feel that I wasn't quite myself. I guess it was just nerves. I would have small spurts of comfort, blasting the ball to all fields for a few pitches, and then back to being nervous. When the tryout was finished I was offered an outfield spot on the ball club, and he said he was impressed with my swing. He told me I was very "tense" and "tight" with my swing. He also told me that I am very strong in my swing, yet my talent is extremely "raw". Everybody tells me I need to loosen up in my swing and I could reach my potential, but I am confused as to what they mean by me being "tight"? Is there any tips or excercises anybody could give to loosen up my hips in my swing and quicken my hands? Thank you so much!
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: For thou art with me;

You will just have to mentally train yourself to relax. Loosen your grip, get some movement going with your bat, develop a trigger of sorts and take you mind off of "muscling up" which will slow down your bat speed.

Do not discount the mental requirements of this game. You will need to get control of this aspect if you wish to continue to advance. Relax and get loose. It IS all in your head!

notice a tightness in my swing. Why?

Because it is important to you. When things are important they are hard to risk. We all get tight.

I think when you are at the bat you need to do this:

1) know what you are trying to achieve. (if it is bp then try to work right to left on the line drives.. then back again into power.. Focus...if you are in a game know what you need to do for the team.)

2) See only "the ball".. think only of seeing the ball... right out of the pitcher's hand.

3) put a good swing on the right ball. Try to focus on pounding the inside of the ball.

4) understand that you can only control what you can control. if you put a good swing on it and it does not fall for a hit, then so what.

Focus on seeing the ball. Putting a good swing on the right ball.
