It's nice to hear these things.  It actually takes practice to become a competent moderator.  The first temptation when becoming a moderator is to find ways to "use" the newly anointed powers.  Moderators need to learn to moderate themselves, however, before they jump the gun to moderate others and that takes a little bit of trial and error to learn that.  Many times, we moderators discuss things behind the scenes amongst ourselves before deciding to moderate.

Conversely, we've lost some very valuable members here because at times, we've decided not to moderate a thread at the behest of a member the way they felt we should have and they have left the site because of that.  As Rick Nelson once said, "You can't please everyone..."  Moderating decisions will never make all parties happy.

One funny moderating story, I had a member chew me out (behind the scenes) for a moderating decision which of course got my dander up a little bit.  After a few back and forths, it was brought to my attention that this member was also a moderator   I said, "I wished I knew that in the first place and I likely wouldn't have lost my temper"

Individual members have the power for self moderation.  If you feel like you said something you regret, you can go back and edit a reply and/or apologize in a new reply.  If you start a thread and you don't like the way it is turning out, you can delete the entire thread by deleting the original post that started the thread.
