Thanks everyone. My '22 verbally committed to a good school this week. I don't post much but I read obsessively and learned a lot from you all.  It was especially helpful these last few months while navigating and anticipating the effect of Covid on the recruiting process. I feel the discussion here helped us be a lot more aware of timing and also the risk of waiting TOO long. Son also did a great job with his outreach to coaches based on strategies shared here on this board, which is actually what helped him land his offers given he spent much of the summer unable to travel due to quarantine rules. Also, special thanks to Francis7 for asking all the questions he does because I found them very useful in our own situation. And also, thanks to PTWood for her generosity and perspective.

Now, more work ahead! Nothing can be taken for granted, whether it's the NLI, the roster spot, or even the school's financial situation in 2 years.

Congratulations @wildcat! Can't wait to be the weird stalker parent who doesn't-look-anything-like-the-kid-she-is-cheering-for at a baseball diamond near me in the future! My excuse will be that it is my grad school alma mater. 

We should start a new thread for parent's sending their kids more than 5 hours away so that we can conscript baseball parent proxies for them!!

Congrats on your son's commitment! 

Have you looked into the baseball programs use of streaming services?    Our son was 8 hours away for home games, and anywhere from 5-12 hours for away games by car.   We did fly some weekends, and airline points are a wonderful thing!  We did drive to many games/weekends as we typically knew ahead of time which games he was starting (pitcher).   Programs were just starting to use the internet for streaming 10 years ago, so your timing is impeccable as many schools stream their games, and inexpensively.

*Actually not right now, unless you travel a lot now. (or put all of our daily living expenses on the card) There is some planning and strategy required with these since you have to hit tiers and spend levels to maximize return. My son was in TX and we were in CA so I got a Southwest card first and qualified for free companion pass. Sign up at the beginning of the year so you maximize the spend so you guarantee you hit the tier you are looking to hit. I fly a lot and ONLY fly Delta and Southwest. (the rest are pretty bad IMO.. and I am a 1M miler on AA) After you hit the target level for the first card then get a hotel card, but again plan it so you hit the target levels. 

Another little known fact is that car rentals are much more expensive when renting from a airport. (airport fees) In my case I leverage my company's car rates and saved a ton of money on long trips. (weekends don't bother) 

Most good programs have active parents who travel and meet existing parents or reach out to see if there is a booster club as they will usually have organized hotels. Once you figure out what chains they use then get that credit card.

congrats to Francis and Wildcat.  I know it's just starting for me (23 parent, lol) so it's great hearing this type of story.

wrt the airline miles thing, our family has a bank card (wells fargo, if it make any difference) that allows us to trade points for discounts (xx number of points gives us $yy off of a flight or hotel). it works out well since we can use them on any airline or hotel chain and it's a purchased ticket so we get flight miles. the bank also has their own in-house travel department so we don't have to shop around. just give the departure and return info and they give us all of the options available.

Congrats @Francis7, @wildcat, and others! Hope that we get there this year!!!

I cant tell you how many $$$ we have saved over the recruiting years of my daughter and my son (I think this is going to be a big spring and summer) with the 1 bag free for everyone in the traveling party and the 1 free companion ticket (Delta is big for us but most airlines do it). $60 x 4 of us =$240 saved potentially EVERY flight. We do my sons gear bag in a bigger bag (we can then throw shoes in it as well along with dirty baseball clothing on the flight home...keep under the weight limit!!!). The cost of the cc is $250/year but a free flight + bags has saved us on average $1000-$1500 per year.
