It seems as if the Illinois Forum is always concerned with listing who "the best" is. What I don't understand then is who is qualified to really define "the best?" Who among us has seen all of the kids play? Who has seen all of the teams play? Who has seen all of the coaches coach?

My point, I constantly wonder why posters are driven or motivated to post that they know "the best", have seen "the best" or are "the best." Clearly, those "All-State" teams don't represent the state or "the best." All I know for sure is that on one given weekend each year, "the best" team for that weekend is given a medal that says that they are the top team in their class in this state. JMHO!

CoachB25 : You know what they say...if the badge fits you must admit! That you may be old, fat, and somewhat(?)ugly! laugh

GO WHITE SOX!!! How about El Duque against Johnnie Damon? Does it really get any better than that?!

Gotta' go now. I'm driving down to Memphis tonight. As I'm going south on I-57 I'll honk hello somewhere between Effingham and Mt. Vernon. You would have to have excellent hearing to notice my greeting! walk

Take care.
CoachB25.....

As us older guys would say, "ride-on"!!!!!!

It looks like I'm not the only one that can "see the forest through the trees". I guess that nobody is really saying that you shouldn't promote these players, what I'm guessing is that some of these players may be overly exposed or overrated?????

I sat with a scout last season, and he explained to me what it is that they look for in a prospect. I used that information later on to ask other scouts what they did in evaluating a player. If anyone has seen an evaluation sheet, or seen a pro teams rating sheet, by-and-large it is a rating system that goes up from approximately 20 to 80. This means numbers that refer to all aspects of a players ability. If a player is to get a chance to tryout at the pro level, they first have to go through 3 to 4 levels of other scouts, or crosscheckers appraisals.

I will, and can respect a professional opinion, and will also respect a college coaches evaluation since they need to be productive almost immediately, every year. I'm not prepared to promote players that are being heralded as the next coming of " ", or " ". No way!!!!!!!!!!
"best" is always talked about because that is the "American way"...simple as that.

Everyone plays for championships...nothing wrong with that.

Everyone wants to be the "best"...nothing wrong with that, either.

Had sons that competed at national karate tournaments....Won some; lost some...but...on any given day, they could have been the best or the worst.

"...On that day and at that time, their coach used to say...they were the BEST"
The "best" is an opinion. At least PBR gives us some information on the local players. I really think that the Chicago newspapers do a poor job of covering high school baseball-especially the Tribune!

The scouts from major league organizations who evaulate the talent in high schools; and then try to predict how will this ballplayer grow in their respective organization to the major league level, will draft those "best" ballplayers in their opinion. If that ballplayer decides that offer is acceptable to him, he will then pursue a major league career.

We can enjoy watching these kids develop in high school. Then maybe one day in the future while watching a major league game, we can say "remember when he played at...high school".

Observer NIL. yes, the best is an opinion. However, it shouldn't be based upon ignorance. If you have a sampling of all of the players in this state then you can formulate your opinion of the best. Otherwise, you only act out of ignorance. Example, we had two players in the Metro East (Illinois side) of the river that were both the top players of their respective classes (A or AA) in the entire St. Louis Metropolitan Area. A few posters saw one of them and supported the assumption that he was a player. The other was drafted high and yet, was never mentioned on this board other than a couple of my posts. In fact, I brought up his name once when talking about catchers and people basically stated by people that had not seen him, that he wasn't in the same class (talent) as the kids that were being mentioned.
Coach, Of course you're correct in your statements. Unfortunately, I don't think that things will ever appreciably change in terms of perception. With the overload of websters from the northern part of our state, it is only from you and maybe a couple of others that MOST will ever hear about the studs from down south. It is not fair, but I believe that by your persistance and forwarding of information the PBR has taken notice and it is reflected in their magazine.
itsrosy, I wish I could get more to post from this area. You are right! Even being as far south as St. Louis, many people/coaches don't consider us in the "South." I don't get to see much in terms of players east of us or more than 25 miles south of us. I have a hard time determining who are the better players even in this area. You have a tremendous advantage in that you have more showcases and better off season training facilities in your area. You have opportunities to see some of these talented kids play where we don't. We are slowly changing. We are beginning to get more of those facilities and I know that a new one Balls n Strikes just opened in Belleville. Our state is so long and narrow that it makes it hard for one area to stay in touch with the other with regards to talents etc. That will never change.
Even the most dedicated person would have a difficult time finding all the good HS Players in the state. Every time I go watch a camp or a showcase I see more good players that I didn't know about and I don't hear anyone talking about. I was at Purdue a few weeks ago and saw a catcher that was from a small school in Central Il, who was hitting the snot out of the ball, with big power to all fields. The kid was awesome...I found out who he was (Alex Urbas).....and lo and behold he was in The PBR list of 100 players. Sean must be doing something right. Hopefully such lists and comparisons can just be celebrations of all the good players out there.
