Seasons Greetings from the Old World,

New among our baseball references, was a gift/addition to HaverSon's coaching library called The Book by these three Sabermetricians:
Tom TANGO
Mitchel LICHTMAN
Andrew DOLPHIN

Among other topics, The Book presents statistically supported managerial strategies for:
• The sacrifice bunt.
• The intentional base on balls.
• Optimizing a batting lineup.
• Hot and cold streaks.
• Clutch performance.
• Platooning strategies.
• Batter/pitcher matchups.

To me, The Book's most interesting, and likely most controversial concept is that a maximized batting order will place the team's best three hitters in the #1, #2 and #4 slots, with the 4th and 5th best hitters fitting into the #3 and #5 holes. Special emphasis is placed on the #2 hitter's offensive value.

Many of The Book's offensive conclusions employ the refined statistical principle of:
Weighted On Base Average or wOBA

Congratulations to Tango, Lichtman and Dolphin for this exceptional analysis. Serious readers and/or a Moneyball types, will love it.

I worked my way through most of it before we put HaverSon back on the plane to Philly this afternoon. I must emphasize that its statistically linked to major league talent, and won't necessarily apply to managing a 14U team (for instance) with a wider talent spread.

The only other caveat relates to a reader's experience/tolerance with/to statistical documentation. It is precisely supported and explained, and could sometimes seem to be "over the top". If you don't have the stomach for Bill JAMES, then this isn't for you.

This strict methodology however is what separates The Book's conclusions from opinion and conventional wisdom. I expect it to become a standard reference in MLB front offices.

The Statistics forum is on this website. When you first get on these message boards, you see catoagories: Announcements, General Forums, Guys, Gals, N Other Groups, Skills and Tips, regional Forums and State Forums. Under Skills and Tips, as the last subcatagory you will find "Statistics & Scorkeeping". That is th place where most of the statistics people post.

The best place to post a Fan's Scouting Report for College on this website would be either the General Items Forum or Going Pro. Both can be found under the General Forums Catagory.

Enjoy.
