Thanks for the props CD ...

The Citadel has a proud tradition as a military school. It's a public college, not a private college like you would expect, but it's on the pricey side, like private schools. There is no obligatory military service for it's grads, so don't let the military-side scare you away. There are a bunch of former land-grant Military colleges in the south, with the other one in South Carolina being Clemson University (yep, it was a military school too).

Charleston is a great town, but like most baseball players (much less cadets), the amount of time available to actually play in the town is limited. Nice for mom/dad when they come to visit for a weekend though. Charleston is kinda expensive for mom/dad until they find their way around and locate the best places at a reasonable cost.

"El Cid" plays in Riley Park in Charleston, so they probably have one of the best stadiums in the nation since they share the stadium with the Charleston Minor League team. Prevailing wind blows directly in from CF so it's definitely a pitchers park. With a large park and strong ocean breezes, they build their team on speed and dicipline. El Cid is considered the primary tenant for Riley Park, so they set their schedule first and the Minor League team has to work around it. Both teams have separate full lockers at the stadium.

Fred Jordan has been at Citadel for a long time and does a great job. His teams are always conditioned and competitive. I know a bunch of players down there they have my complete respect.

Downside: There aren't a bunch of female cadets at The Citadel. You would have to travel to either of the cross-town rivals (College of Charleston or Charleston Southern). Discipline is tough, but not for a baseball player (or any college athlete really - they are pretty self-disciplined on their own). The recruiting difficulty (which is a shame) generally means that they don't have a great amount of depth, but their starting lineup is solid from top to bottom usually. You see the lack of depth mainly in the depth of the bullpen, since pitchers are at a premium everywhere (particularly starting this year).

The Citadel grads will plug into a good network, particularly within SC, have lots of respect and generally make a very good income. What they develop, more than any particular major is leadership and they do a good job of it.

It's not a setting for everyone, but I STRONGLY encourage you to visit and do an official visit if invited.

PS> Before moving to Riley park in 1997, the games used to be played for both the college and minor league team at old "College Park Stadium", which is still there, but now threatened by termite swarms so it's closed down. That field is 84 years old. It looks strange, particularly looking out towards CF since it comes to a point, until you realize that they turned the stadium around 20+ years ago and built new wooden bleachers. It's a great old historic place to go watch a ball game if they get the bug problem fixed. Lots of turn of the LAST CENTURY atmosphere (but the bathrooms s**k).
Son was recruited by Citadel. Really liked the coaches. Do have the military institution atmosphere. Looks like in 4 years there you would have opportunity to go to a regional if past repeats itself. Good crowd at games. Not sure if its a good thing or bad, but they do not let players go, so that hurts recruiting. They were all over my son until new rules kicked in and then they had a whole new ball game goin on because they couldn't sign as many and had to really look at what they had b/c couldn't cut anyone to get their roster down like the other dIs. At that point we were no longer interested, so I am not sure what the bottom line was. . .
Graduate from the citadel and I think the job network out there is a huge plus. They look out for one another.
