My son and I returned from attending a Complete Showcase in Tomball, Tx.  yesterday.

One word:  awesome.   I would recommend this showcase to any 16-17 y.o. wanting to find out how you measure in the eyes of  D1-JuCo coaches.  I use this age only because there are quite a few decisions and paperword (FAFSA) that need to be filled out by the senior year.

30 coaches were promised to attend and 39 actually were present.  Very well organized and actually ended an hour early.

I enrolled my son as a pitcher and catcher.

The first part of the day consisted of pitchers throwing a bullpen with velocity being announced to the coaches after each pitch.   A lot of stretching and throwing before the kids got to the mound.  60 yd times were recorded for catchers.   POP times recorded by the catchers.

The position players (Infielders, Outfielders) came after the pitchers and catchers completed their sections.  Then all positions (except pitcher only) received 8 swings.

My son received 2 evaluations from 2 separate coaches twice during the day.  The evaluations were brutally honest and I think at this point I'm more realistic as to where my son will be able to play right now should he not improve.

Around noon, for about an hour and a half, two college coaches fielded questions from the parents in he stands.

I've been very wary about "throwing" money at a camp and feel like I waste a lot of money this last summer during travel ball.  But this Showcase is a "must" for any parent and player thinking about baseball life in college.

Glad to hear it was a good experience.  If you don't mind me asking how much did the event cost?

The event is $199 for the first position and $50 for each additional position.   The way I look at it is a blunt evaluation can save you a lot of money down the road chasing colleges that would not be a good fit for your son.

To be honest what I got from the evaluation is I don't think my son will be continuing baseball after high school.   I don't see the motivation to improve.  So this will be the last time I spend money on baseball.  Anything else he pays for.

LIONBASEBALL,

Doesn't your son throw mid 80s?  And doesn't he catch also.

If so, there are many colleges that would be interested.  And you don't need to spend a lot of money to get them interested.  Then again, maybe your son wouldn't be interested in those colleges.

I wouldn't give up yet.  Is it you or him that doesn't see the motivation to improve?

Yes, my son throws mid 80's and with bad technique so if he is motivated to work on his deficiencies I believe he could get to the magical 90 by the end of the summer.  My son knows what he needs to work on to get better and with the mound that I built and the SwingaWay system I bought he should be out there on his own working on it.    I know that baseball ends for most kids by the end of high school and a smaller percentage have the drive to continue on to college.

Don't get me wrong, he is not lazy.  He has a part time job paying off a car, 4.0 student, and gets up before school to go work out with a buddy.  Right now baseball isn't a top priority.   It's just hard knowing that the game might end sooner than later for him.

Personally my goal is for him to get out of college debt free, with a job that he can start earning money.   His drive is there for academics which is why I'm going to work hard at trying to get him into one of the military academies.

Son attended a few showcases when he was in HS and agree that this was one of the better ones.  They are brutally honest and IMHO that's what you need.  We did several just to get an overall evaluation of where he fit.  This gave us as well as him starting points to work on.  This allowed him to hear first hand what others assessed his talent as being.  We ultimately chose another college that wasn't a part of the camp group of coaches, but we are still completely pleased that we allowed our son to attend 2 of their events.  We went to several and weren't nearly as impressed with they way they were run.  Just our opinion.
