First game of son's Senior season yesterday he had a no-no going into the 5th. Good defense behind him save for a couple of dropped fly balls by the OF it seemed to be a spectacular start.

He's got 2 outs bottom of the 5th. In the zone doing his thing.

Im watching the game online and I notice he looks over into the dugout, shakes his head. Throws the next pitch and the batter laces a single through the gap between 3B and Short. Single. No hit bid flushed. He finishes the inning and then Coach pulls him in 6th after a couple more hits. Proud dad.

He calls me after the game talking about this and that. I asked him what distracted him in the 5th when he looked into the dugout and shook his head. He said one of his teammates belted out "wow, he has a no-no going!" Guess what? Next pitch - Single! LOL

He said he wanted to throw a ball into the dugout! Jinxed! He was laughing about it.

Gotta love the game of baseball!

I’m trying to figger out what venue your boy is playing in. The GHSA calendar says baseball’s 1st contest can’t be until Feb. 18, and as far as I know, the NCAA doesn’t start until Feb. 15.

I’m jealous and would like to know where baseball’s being played at this time of the year. Wink
Stats,

TPM is correct. My son plays in the NAIA's SSAC conference here in the Southeast. They traveled to Florida over the weekend and played a 4 games series going 3-1.

Thanks so much to all you guys. I hope so as well TPM. He was able to convince his coach this year to let him call his own pitches which I know is quite a huge trust factor. Hopefully he proved yesterday that he is capable of picking the right pitches. So far! lol.

I can't get that look of him shaking his head as he looked into the dugout. It was classic. I thought maybe the coach was saying something. Anything.

P.S. Stats, looking at DakStats for NAIA baseball it appears that some California NAIA teams have already played several games. I found THAT strange myself.

I have to admit that I know very little about NAIA ball. As far as I know, we only have one NAIA school within 100 miles of here, but we have JUCOs coming out of our ears, and 2 DI schools within 50 miles.

I took a look at DakStats. Glad to see there’s a place for people to look at that stuff if they want. I do wish though that those on-line sources went into a bit more detail, but small steps are better than no steps. Wink

BTW, do you know of all their games are 9 innings?
Bum, Jr. was pitching in a collegiate league a few years back and had a no-hitter going into the 6th inning. (He had thrown their first-ever no-hitter the year before, so I'm thinking, "Can lightening strike twice?"

I go to buy a beer between innings. The beer guy says, "Hey, do you know that kid is throwing a no-hitter?" Startled, I told him yes--that was my son--and you just jinxed him! (All in good natured fun.)

Yup, next inning a lead off single.

I go back up to the beer guy, who was extremely apologetic. The no-hitter was lost but this Bum got a free beer.
What an awesome story Bum! Love it!

Stats, NAIA ball in some parts of the country like here in the Southeast is IMO pretty good ball. Like every Division and Conference they have their weaker teams but some of the top tier teams can compete daily with solid D2 programs. Lee University is usually the top program in our SSAC Conference. They usually have 4-6 guys drafted every year. I just noticed the other day that the starting catcher for NC State (Danny Canela) for the past 3 years for some reason just transferred to Lee early January. Like they needed to get any better! Sheesh. I know there are other programs across the country just as stout. We have our fair share of JUCO's also. A lot of NAIA programs here are now going D2. Lee will be D2 next year.

I’m sorry if I gave the impression I didn’t think NAIA ball was of a very good quality! That’s not it at all. I was just trying to say that I’m ignorant about NAIA programs because I don’t have much access to them. From Feb thru the end of May, I’m pretty well all consumed by HSB. Our team plays 3 games a week, and with my work as a scorer, statistician, and reporter, plus I try to catch every Indians game on MLBTV. I don’t have a lot of time left to go to college games of any kind, let alone drive 100 miles one way to watch a game. I prolly would, but we have at least 6 very good JUCOs and the 2 DI schools within an hour of my house.

That’s what’s great about baseball, and what’s bad about it at the same time. On the good side, between all the different levels, not to mention tournaments, web cams, and all the other means of access, anyone who wants to can certainly get his fill. On the down side, because there’s so many venues available, its hard to get many butts in the seats, outside of immediate family and very close friends. Frown
Congrats to your Son on an awesome start! I sure wish that I could have been there to watch, we had every intention of being there.

I am excited for your guy this year, stay healthy and strong. Getting the start for the first game of the season shows a lot of confidence in your Son by the coach. Getting the win only confirms he made the correct choice!

Enjoy the season, let me know if you have any more games within 100 miles of me. South Georgia works if he plays in that neck of the woods!
