Krak,
The SCAC runs baseball differently than other sports.
They separate into two conferences with the West being traditionally stronger and dominant.
I am not sure how it will be configured with Birmingham Southern and Colorado College entering.
What I would guess is that Austin College, Southwestern, Trinity, Hendrix, Millsaps and Colorado College with be in the West and DePauw, Ogelthorpe, Rhodes, Birmingham Southern, Centre and Sewanee will be in the East.
Every school has fine/top academics. Schools in the West have very nice baseball facilities. It is more variable in the other division.
Based on 2007, there will be a two weekend post season tournament for the NCAA automatic bid. In week one, the top 3 teams from each conference will compete. The following week, the two survivors of that will play during the SCAC Spring festival.
The Western conference described above, with Rhodes and Birmingham Southern(soon I would bet) plays at a level with top DIII's anywhere.
Travel varies with the schools. Normally, Trinity flies to all out of state games but there certainly can be at least one long bus ride each year.
I am not sure if you have seen the SCAC website but during the Fall, Trinity has teams ranked #1, #3, #14, and #24. In Volleyball, the SCAC has 4 in the top 25.
I agree that Birm-Southern should heat up quickly and contend pretty much out-of-the-box. Will Colorado College field a baseball team...?

Just trying to get up-to-speed on the conference. Have been over to d3sports, too, but it's been awhile since anyone's posted on the SCAC thread. I guess it's pretty much down-time this time of year!
