This was a classic picture taken by Cleveland Plain Dealer photographer Chuck Crowe in 2004. The brilliant part was not trying to capture the ball or the hitter but the expression of the crowd after it was hit. The ball was absolutely crushed over the light pole in left center and you can infer how far it was hit by the gaping expression on people's faces and the angle of their heads.

This was the 2004 state championship semi-final game between Mentor High School and Reynoldsberg. On the mound for Reynoldsberg that day was Eric Fryer who pitched 9 innings and went on to Ohio State and is now with Pittsburgh's AAA team. Mentor won that game 2-1 in 10 innings. Mentor lost the 2004 State championship to Cincinnnati Moehler the next day 6-2. Moehler pitched 1st round draft choice 6'10" Andrew Brackman and lefty 3rd rounder Erik Surkamp who is on the verge of the big leagues with the Giants.

We know who was on the mound...who was in the batter's box?

His name was Tom Doty and he went on to have a pretty decent college career at Marietta. He was the 2006 Midwest regional MVP for Marietta and helped them win the D3 National Championship. As you might imagine, he was a power hitter. My son was the shortstop on that team and scored the winning run in the top of the 10th inning. He can be seen as the 5th person from the right coming out of the dugout with the 1st finger prominently raised Smile

Wink

Good point. Ironically, my son would face both of them again while in college. The first time, Brackman beat Coastal Carolina 4-1 and my son had one hit that day off him. The second time, my son got a little revenge as he hit a 2-run homer late in the game to beat NC State in a midweek game. That same season (2008), both Coastal and NC State were Super Regional teams. Small world sometimes...
Great photo!

Cincinnati's Archbishop Moeller HS...Ah!...the memories! Grew up very close to Moeller HS. HS home of Ken Griffey Jr. and Barry Larkin...along with Brackman (also an awfully good bball player) and Surkamp (and truthfully, a heck of a lot of other great college athletes).

Almost went there myself...parents wanted me too...but I rebelled...no GIRLS! Eek
