Well, you could see just how badly the transfer portal hit schools in this years bowl games.  Lots of transfers sitting out.  (except maybe in yesterday's games).    My guess it won't be long before something changes - bowl games didn't mean squat and were not fun to watch.  I also wonder if this is teaching kids bad habits, its easier to just transfer versus earning a spot.  I'm not saying the portal is bad, I am sure it has helped a lot of kids (joe burrow for one).

There will either be a significant change to how the portal works which will affect baseball, or a significant change to how the bowls work which won’t affect baseball. I’m guessing given the money and exposure the bowl games give college football it’s the portal that will change.

Personally, I won’t watch a bowl game where both teams aren’t at least 8-4. This holds true even if it’s my college. All it takes to be 6-6 and bowl eligible is 3-6 in conference and beat up on three non conference cupcakes.

Absolutely it will be the portal dates that change.   There is no other college revenue sport that is open for portal activity within its season.  It makes absolutely no sense.  The NCAA gets exactly what you'd expect.  Clearly they didn't think this through.

Agree, no team under 8-4 should be in a bowl game.

The challenge is the transfer portal dates can't be one size fits all.

Should football have its own dates?

How does it impact the academic calendar?

Note, a coach can and will leave a team before the end of the post season, why not players?

Why would a player risk his health for a team that he are already given his 2 week notice?

You're forgetting the golden rule...those that make the gold make the rules.   Football is a huge money maker.  You can count on the dates being changed to accommodate increased revenue.

Why would any player risk his health in a meaningless bowl game?  As I think about it, especially the teams that are 6-6 or worse.  What is the incentive for the players to put their bodies on the line?  Maybe a rule needs to be changed that pays the players significant money for playing in a bowl game, if those games are making so much money.

Excellent point

I think the whole bowl system needs complete overhaul - personally I'd watch every round of a 16 team playoff. No bowls, just a few legacy games like Army/Navy, etc.

That being said - I also think any player who doesn't want to "put their body on the line for a meaningless game" should have to pay back their scholarship for that season and have access to the facilities revoked as they prepare for the draft or to transfer.

If they are paying for you to go there and play football, you need to play football or you do not reap the benefits of the scholarship. It's madness

Not forgetting. And I agree.

They would need to share the gold, otherwise the players will at some point will do a mass protest and simply not play.

There are more players who need the scholarship and the opportunity than there are superstars who can dictate the terms of the market.

85 scholarship players a year. More will end up in sales than the NFL. The education is more important to most of the kids than the sport they play, even if they don't know it yet.

Football ≠ Basketball. Can't abandon the collegiate route and go straight pro, they need the 3+ years of development. As long as that remains the case, there is no alternative where they have it better. No investment group is going to come around and give 85+ kids $50k+ a year, provide top notch facilities, provide free health care, degree, food, housing, etc. x 133 FBS teams.

The players need the NCAA. If they want to protest and not play, they better find a career path that does not involve a degree, because the scholarships goes away as soon as they stop.

I agree with CBI. Tough to change the dates if a player is trying to switch in time for the spring semester. You also have exams to contend with in December. We are talking about “student athletes”, right? Personally, I’m glad the networks and sponsors took it on the chin this year. Why should these players be demonized for not providing free content for ESPN and sponsors?

I agree.  I'm glad about espn and sponsors as well. I just can't believe how much the high school baseball recruiting scene has changed.  I am really going to have to figure things out for my 2027.   Going to be interesting
