My son is a senior in high school, and his journey has been like so many players. Good seasons, set backs, injury, having to fight for a starting role. Ups and downs. Good coaches, not so good coaches. Rejection. Success.

This week he had his first home game of the season. As I was watching, I was struck by what a leader he has become. He has true presence on the field and in the dugout. I could see the younger players looking at him like he's the guy. I could see my 18 year old son through the eyes of a 14 year old. Wow.

This young man who used to frustrate me by not working as hard as his mother thought he should, worked hard to come back from a injury his junior year, and had a great summer season. And this past Friday, he came home after catching a game, then headed to the gym for a Friday night work out.

I am so grateful for the opportunity baseball has provided him. Baseball has given him the opportunity to overcome obstacles, to fail before succeeding. What a gift.

So for those of you with 14-15 years olds who may be making you a bit crazy, relax. It is incredibly likely that he will get there, in his own time. And you will be incredibly proud when he does.

Enjoy the journey. It truly goes by too quickly.
