$200 Million ....... "Best Team Money Could Buy!"

A week ago, virtually every "expert" had these guys proclaimed as WS Champs.

It's amazing what happens when you actually have to play the games.

In the end, they end up with this in the biggest game of their season.....

....A firstbaseman who has no clue how to play the position. How many throws was Sheffield catching in on his belt buckle. Perhaps Steinbrenner should have spent a couple of bucks on a coach that could have told him you always catch the ball in out in front!

....A $25 million a year mental case at third base who gets dropped to 8th in the lineup and looked like a 9-yr old in first LL game every time a ball was hit at him.

....An outfield that couldn't throw out a runner if he fell down between bases. There is probably still a Detroit runner going from first to third on routine single.

....Such a vaunted pitching staff that Jared Wright is the starter for an elimination game.

Yep, it's amazing what happens when you actually play the games!

NHFDad pretty much summed it up. With the exception of Jeter and Cano they are truly flawed. Everyone but Bernie, Sheffield and Mussina are still under contract for next year. That was a butt wuppin. Not a good time to have a bad week. They proved you can't win every game 11-10. That team was old when the season started. They are going to need walkers next year.

We are all so fickle. After the first game, I thought Detroit was toast. Well, throw in some of the best young pitching talent in the game and murderer's row is in trouble.

Rather than beat up the Yankees, how about some kudos for Detroit. When was the last time we saw a team with this many 100 mph throwers? They also may have had one of the best drafts this year getting Andrew Miller and other quality pitchers. What a team this could be for the next few years.

Exactly CD. Detroit deserves kudos for out coaching and out playing a very good team.
Torre is SO gone! He looked and coached like he was totally clueless. But maybe that clueless look was "How on Earth could this lineup NOT be hitting?" Apart from Jeter they did nothing. I swear they should blow that team up. It's not even a team. It's just a bunch of individuals. That's the true reason they haven't won a title in well, a few years anyway. IMHO.
Gentlemen,

I completely agree, a large part of the Yankees losing was because Detroit simply played better. The Tigers deserve a lot of credit!

My post was a shot at all those who looked at the Yankees before the postseason began, and after the first game of the ALDS and annoited them Champions despite being a very flawed team.

They had a very good regular season, but wre hardly the team all the "experts" were claiming. Especially the pitching staff! This moring on ESPN it was simply summed up with this..."Jared Wright would NEVER have started a post-season game on Yankee teams of the late 90's, let alone an elimination game"

Steinbrenner must be about 10 shades of red today....especially with the Mets sweeping the Dodgers an the same day his $200 million team sank to the bottom!

Bottom line to all this about a $200 million team,....There is no price tag on character and heart!
Please don't blow up the Yankees, that would mean that they go to another team and poison that team as well. Other than the original Yankees (Jeter and Bernie Williams), and Damon has anybody on that team ever won a World Series?

The truly amazing figure being thrown about is the 1.2 BILLION dollars plus, that the Yankees have spent on salaries and luxury tax in the last 6 years with no championships. I find that figure just staggering.

Torre being fired is a joke. What more could he have done. He had to move his error prone MVP to the eight hole and keep putting pitchers on the mound who were over the hill.

Cashman has run the farm system into the ground. With few prospects, the rebuild may be long and painful. The only way is if some club takes them off the hook by trading their prospects for the Yankees "superstars." It will be an interesting off-season.
Good post Deldad.Upper Management should take the heat on this one not Torre. A manager can only work with what he has, and I would imagine he had a lot of egos to satisfy. It's a team based on individualuality, not with the team concept in mind. That's what I think blows everyone's mind.

I heard talk down here, Marlins want Arod, this is his hometown, they would gladly take him if they pay his salary and send teh ynakees pitchers. Arod is a Miami boy, they would welcome him with open arms.

I heard a really good commentary. Many teams work with players to make them the best they can for trade value not necessarily their own players(example Dontrelle and Cabrerra who were traded from the Cubs). Sanchez and someone else from Boston for Beckett. The yankees don't develop their farm system so aquiring top talent costs them so much, they don't have much young talent to trade. I don't know if that is so, but found that quite interesting. I also heard that there is so much talent in the minors with no place to go because high paying payroll teams are afraid to take the unexperienced players and give them a chance. Alot of this has to do with fan base, are some fans willing to go through a down year for their team to develop. some don't have fans to fill stadiums. Teams like the Marlins, the Tigers, the Twins, the Brewers, the Pirates can afford to do that, they don't fill their stadiums. Some teams just too afraid to take that chance, due to sell out crowds. I also heard that George has been contemplating wiping the slate clean and starting over, he may just do some of that soon.

I think that there are going to be a lot of changes made with a lot of teams where spending lots of money does not work for the post season. JMO.

Deldad, good time for your son to be an up and coming talented young pitcher!

This just reinforces the old saying that "there's a reason they play the games".

Congratulations to the Detroit Tigers on one of the truly great moments in their franchise's history!

Does anyone think it is worthwhile to compare this Yankees team to the USA team that played in the World Baseball Classic? Two supremely talented teams, perhaps with too many superstars and neither went nearly as far as expected, or should have. I wonder if a team with a few superstars and more solid journeymen who are truly motivated, like some of the other nations in the WBC (Do the Tigers have even one true superstar?) wouldn't be a better approach. Don't give me the arguement that these guys are professionals, either. I serioulsy wonder if a differenttype of mix would win it all more often.

Good post! The Yankees are very close right now. They just need to add a couple of puzzle pieces. There are two All Stars available right now, tanned rested and ready. Cash should speed dial Raffy Palmero and Sammy Sosa, bring back Bernie and ARod, and they are good to go. Wink
Let's just throw this out there and see what you think. What if the Yankees would have taken some of that money and spent it on draft picks. Billy Bean used his "Money Ball" strategy to make the A's a contender on a yearly basis what if the Yankees had used the "Big Money Ball" approach and spent their money on those hard to sign draftees. Without naming names, look at the last 5 drafts, how many great players have dropped out of the first 2 rounds of the draft because of signability issues or college commitments. When you have that much money throw some at the up and coming players. Instead, they drafted a basketball player with there first round pick.

Pinella is not the right man, the game has passed him by.

TPM-Pinstripes would not make me a happy camper.

Exactly!!! If you've watch Detroit, you've seen that with your own eyes.... young guys and a manager who played (most of the time) for one game at a time. Did you see Rogers last night when Bonderman came out? Rogers was grinning ear to ear for the kid! Regardless of how much further Detroit goes, they've been a fun team to watch with a combination of no-nonsense while demonstrating a youthful enthusiasm and joy. As has been said, with the talent they have in their system... I think they'll continue to be at the top!

Perhaps if some of the Yankee's superstars played elsewhere, they'd actually be able to perform better? I think this is a team of egos and lacks almost all of the qualities I see with Detroit. There's no chemistry with the group whatsoever. A manager is just a part of the entire picture and Torre can't be left holding the bag.... although he made some odd choices during this series IMO.
