Runners on first and third…one out…home team batting….long inning. Despite frequent communication on number of outs, batter pops out for second out and a handful of defensive players run off the field thinking third out. The rest of the team follows. My partner and I make eye contact. confirm just 2 outs. In the meantime, the runner on third assumes 3 outs also and heads to dugout. After a few seconds, players realize that there are just 2 outs and a mad scramble ensues to get back onto the field. Runner on first, who knew the outs, races to second. Runner who had been on third returns to third. Everything settles.

Question…Where is the point of no return for the runner who had been on third? Would he be the third out had he entered the dugout?

This weekend we had a first base ump who between each half inning jogged down the right field line and back -- one inning he began running after the second out---game was delayed as we waited for him to return to position--even the parents in the stands were asking "What the heck is he doing?"

I guess that umpires can lose count

No. By rule the umpire's authority does not extend to fans who remain off the field.

However, umpires may, if a fan becomes a distraction to the proper conduct and management of the game, request that the TD or AD, whichever is appropriate, have him removed.
I trust since there were no more posts to this thread, that a "December 21, 2012 End Of The World" situation didn't develop?

Maybe just a game where two teams went out and played baseball without a lot of parents/coaches/umpires getting into it transpired?

Maybe?

...and was it just good baseball? 99 times out of a 100 it usually is...
Well coached, talented players in a challenging, well officiated tournament always results in a positive experience for everyone.

Just got back from the Jr. Sunbelt Classic held in relatively remote McAlester, OK. I know where they found the coaches and players, but they also found some very good umpires.

Great quality of play and all games finished in two hours or less. No complaining or delays, just baseball nirvana, at least for this small minded guy. Wink
