Coach is going to try an experiment this year. He is playing my son at third. But he is going to position him almost in the hole at short, move the SS over close to up the middle and move 2nd close to the hole. He is doing it because of the players we have coming back. Pitchers get all bunts to third side and first gets all to the first side. On obvious bunt situations they will play straight up.

Anyone see this before?

If it is what I think it is I have seen it before. It is called pitch away play away. It is very succesful at the HS level and I have even seen it work at the college level. The only thing is it hinges on the pitcher keeping the ball on the outside part of the plate.

Down falls I have seen is when oppo guys come to the plate it feeds into their plans. Also if the pitcher misses over the plate you tend to catch the defense out of position.

Son's summer college team did something like this with the outfield... played everything with a heavy shift toward oppo, which sort of makes sense when you think about how often pitchers try to work away. It was interesting to see the pros and cons play out. Seems like it was pretty much a wash. BTW, they did not have a particularly hard throwing staff and it didn't matter who was throwing or hitting, they pretty much stuck with the plan. Every ball hit down LF line (RH hitter) was an easy double, though.
