FED QUESTION JUST THINKING ABOUT THIS !!!! OK I know we all have the batter runner running to first (if unoccupied or with two out)on a DROPPED third strike BUT what is the rule on a ball that hits the dirt (the batter swings and misses)and then is fielded by the catcher...I know I've always had the runner going to first BUT that rule is ONLY for a dropped third strike. Can anyone help me on this rule or caseplay?

What we commonly refer to as a dropped third strike is, more specifically, a third strike not caught. Since the pitch hit the ground before the catcher received it the pitch can no longer be caught in flight. Therefore the rule application is the same as if the catcher dropped the pitch.

See Rule 2-22-3 and 7-4-1b
Also, the case book has two examples (7-4-1A and 7-4-1B) but they both refer to the catcher dropping the ball.
