Son, HS freshman, has had a rough Fr season due to a pre-season basketball injury (broken throwing hand) and then a shoulder impingement that has lingered off and on throughout his first varsity season. According to the doctors we’ve seen it’s nothing major and nothing that will require surgery. Basically it’s an issue of the bones growing faster than muscles. He’s 6’5” with more baby fat than muscle…even though he’s fairly thin. This has been his first season of baseball (rec, travel or school) where things haven’t gone his way. I think it’ll be a positive in the long run.

His plan has been to pitch this summer for a larger org on their top team. However, with his off and on lingering shoulder issue, he came to me last week wanting my thoughts on sitting out this summer season. Instead, he would workout at a reputable facility doing arm care, weights, flexibility exercises, etc.

I’m good with it and think he’s wiser than I was at his age to give up an entire summer in hopes of being better in the future.

Just for background..He has had regular conversations with two Power 5 schools and occasional conversations with a few more since the end of summer last year. How will they feel about this decision? Should he ask them? My thoughts-he has plenty of time to worry about college…get 100% healthy, stronger and work on mechanics as the summer goes on.

A mature conversation for a 15 year old. Only thing I can think of is that if he has a shoulder injury, how much working out will he be able to do? I'd follow up with a sports doctor and get his thoughts.

If there is a season that matters least, it is summer after freshman year - if there were going to be time off, now would be the time to do it.

My son never played summer ball in three years of college ball, it drove me crazy. His HS hitting coach called and got him a spot at the cape for Falmouth, he flat turned it down to do his standard summer strength, conditioning and arm care routine. If your son thinks he's better off taking care of his body, then that's likely what he should do. If you press him and things go south, you'll have to wear that... If you already have P5 interest and he's a freshman, it's not like he needs the exposure. Just my opinion, congrats to you both!

Get the shoulder right.  If not right the summer season will not show well to those power 5 schools anyway.  Don't ask them, this is your son's call with your guidance.   I agree with @PABaseball, go see a sports doc, get an evaluation and a likely PT program and focus on getting the shoulder right.   My son is back in the MRI machine this week for a lingering shoulder issue.  Had been good for almost two years, shoulders are tricky.  Good luck.

Thanks for the responses. For those asking, we’ve seen two shoulder specific sports drs…both said the same thing. PT to gain internal rotation and he’s ok to pitch. After two months of that, he’s back pitching but still has some discomfort. Dr says he’s improved the internal rotation but it’s not where they want it. Player development guy at training facility thinks he can prevent a lot of the issue with changing mechanics slightly…which makes the decision easier in my mind. Getting confirmation from much more experienced parents on this site helps too!!!

Thanks, everyone.
