Yep, still live. Sounds like blue outta stop by lowes for some root-be-gone and spray his shoes.

Saw in college WS a few years back, R1, R2, U3 in C. Slow roller to SS who flips to F4, F4 fakes the throw to 1B, wheels all the way around and pegs a throw to get the rounding R2 at 3B. Hit's blue right in the mellon the ball goes 6 rows back in the stands, 2 bases TOT. It was a hi-lite so dont' know the outcome of blue sure looked bad though.

Not sure how many blues on here used to play, but it's always amazed me how fast a ball seems to be when you don't have a glove on and are just trying to get out of it's way. Regardless though blue should never get hit by a thrown ball unless they simply aren't paying attention or it hits something else first. Specially from the outfield.
the old umpire addage, "keep your eyes everlastingly on the ball" is good advice from times past.....if your eyes are on the ball then your chances of being hit by a thrown ball go down....

However, I disagree with JJK on his assessment.... there are other responsiblities that need to be attended to such as seeing the touch of the bases that can pull your eyes from the ball momentarily.........if you couple that with a less than quality throw or less than sound baseball judgment of some players, getting hit with thrown balls does happen..... at that time the ball is live and in play.....

The only time the ball is dead when it hits an umpire is if it is a batted ball.....

PIAA tells it like it is. Ball players in highs school and even the lower minors will not always do the expected or obvious thing. Add to that, you may side step to avoid a thrown ball only to have it "tail" and still hit your leg or foot.

This shouldn't happen often, but it can happen and can have nothing to do with growing roots in the grass. In 30 years I have been hit by a batted ball twice and by a thrown ball once.
