Runners on 1st and 2d. Grounder to SS, batter is thrown out and runners advance to 2d and 3d. Even though batter was called out, runner stayed on 1st and no one realizes he improperly stayed on the field so now bases are loaded but it should be runners on 2d and 3d base. Next batter gets up and is hit by a pitch. People now realize there was an extra runner on base. Of course, arguments ensue.

Umpires discuss with managers and decide that there was no harm done, hit batsman goes to first which should have been vacant and improper baserunner who was on 1st simply goes to the dugout.

Correct call? If not, what should the correct call be?

They fixed it but it is very important that this type of thing doesn't happen. At the end of play take a look around and make sure everyone where they are supposed to be and there is no possible further play. It is something that with experience is done without really thinking about. I always scan the field including the dugouts for guys hanging in live ball.
MST, is right, I was on the recieving end of such
an umpire this past weekend, SP, one man.

I'm F4.

R1, B lashes a single mid gap RC, R1 to 3rd,
BR tries to stretch it for two.

Great one hop throw from F8, I field on the hop 1st base side of 2nd, slap a tag down which rakes the BR from about the knees all the way up to his chest as he slides in.
"Safe, on the chest, Time." is the call.

I can only wonder in disbelief, check my glove to make sure the balls really in there?

But then, BR pops up and heads for his first base dugout.. he gets about 1/2 way there, when the umpire glances back from his jog back to the plate, stops and says "where you going? I said safe"

Myself and the BR just look at each and shrug, I tell him, "ah, make sure that only goes down as a single in the book, huh?" He laughed and agreeed.

My SP team has 6 umpires on our roster. It's nice to see, when a call goes wrong, we understand,
He called what "he" saw, live with it and move along. But heaven help one if they blow a rule interp..
HAVE A SAFE AND SANE 4TH...
