Please pardon me for being a bit lazy, but in know someone can provide a quick answer. Background: We have a rare couple of free weekends between HS basketball and baseball (2015 pitcher Delmarva Canes) and wanted to travel south to a couple of solid D1 programs to watch some baseball. Question: Is it inappropriate to contact the coaching staff for tickets and possible introduction?

If it was me I would not be asking for free anything from a coach as a freshmen. I would have your son contact the recruiting coach and let him know you are interested in their program and will be touring schools in the area and will stop by and see them play. Leave it at that, if they offer great and if not then you are better off. A couple of $10 tickets are not going to break the bank and I think it comes off wrong asking in advance.

JMO.
I am with BOF on this. I think the intro email indicating interest as well as some info on 2015 son from son is the way to go. I think asking for tix in the same email could be perceived as another motive(even though in your situation that is not he case).

We visited a few campus's two years ago with my 2013. He sent the email ahead of time to two schools in NC close in location. One HC stopped by during a practice to speak with son for 10 mins. Another HC had no interest in speaking with 2013 during a practice break. No offense was taken on our part.

Should be a fun trip. Enjoy the process.
mcmmccm,
Keep one thing in mind about the e-mail; for Freshmen and Sophomores, the coach can't reply back to you with specifics about your visit. If you call and get them on the phone, they can talk to you. Just don't expect an e-mail reply to discuss your visit.

You may want to have your son call and talk to the recruiting coordinator and discuss the visit.
You're on the right track by getting out and watching some games and visiting schools - even this early in your sons HS career. Be sure to arrive at the field early - watch the warm-ups, enjoy the music (its usually going full blast), see the players interact with each other, watch the coaches. The process should fire your son up!

Walk around the university; get a copy of the school newspaper - see what it has on the game; it gives you a little feel for how the school/student body looks at baseball.

While speaking to a coach that early may be premature, if your son has the courage (and you arrive early), let him introduce himself to the coach - the parents need not be there for that. I know that my son at that age wasnt ready to introduce himself; but over the next few years he learned how. Baby steps; but necessary steps!
