NFHS Rules: Player hits triple. Ball back to pitcher, steps off rubber and throws to 2nd to appeal that runner missed the base. Throw sails into CF and runner scores. Ball thrown back in to pitcher who attempts to continue the appeal.

Umpire rules that an intervening play occurred and the opportunity to appeal had therefore expired.

Arguably, couldn't the case be made that this was one continuous play?

By rule, the defense has not initiated a play. The appeal (part II) should have been allowed.

agreed 100%.....An appeal is not a play....and its one that CC calls "a vital distinction" and one that umpires need to understand......Without it, the defense could never appeal more than one runner...

As a trainer of umpires, its disheartening to know that this NFHS umpire didnt know this.....

As you will note in this thread, the majority of umpires do get it right.

Interesting stand alone statement. As my first three years of watching varsity baseball wind down, I would only add that most fans don't know what "it" is, which leads to much of the striffe, confusion and general displeasure with umpires. Bad angles, no understanding of the rules, parent goggles, etc. all contribute to this.

I do agree that most of the time they get it right, once everyone understands what "it" is. I get frustrated with all the idiots who have no clue and want to bend my ear.

...and then they want me to change the ground ball their kid hit through the shortstops legs on four hops to a hit...

Arghhh One game, and one more year and I'll be done.

jmoff,
Ive often been told by people that being an umpire must be a thankless job...although it well may have its thankless moments, on the whole it is not a thankless job.....

But being the official scorer must be close.....I've said it here manytimes that often the game that is reported in the paper bears little or no resemblence to the game I umpired.....

Some of the schools use a parent and thats the root of all the issues.....FC's and obvious errors reported as hits, wins and saves given regardless of being valid...

A couple of schools who have official scorers trhat I know personally are pressured beyond belief to change/fudge stats....up to one school having to post a "no unauthorized personnel" sign on the press box to keep parents from lobbying for a change in the scoring....

Ill stay on the field....glad you are in the box....
