WillieBobo is on the right on. The catchers job is to not let the ball get behind them. You can become an assest to your team by not giving up bases due to wild pitches and pass balls. Definately take the off season to work on blocking the baseball.

Another area you will want to concentrate on is receiving the baseball. Try to make everything look as smooth and refined as possible. There are many different theroies out there, learn as much as you can about them so you can adapt any in a game. Some umpires want you to stick the low pitch, some want you to recycle the low pitch, some have even asked me to catch and stick on the upstroke if I want I called strike on the low pitch. You have to be able to adapt and learn what the umpire is looking for. You can only learn this by catching bullpens! They are not fun, but man are they going to help you.

You will also have to work to become familiar with the pitchers on your staff. When I was in college, there were a couple of pitchers who would only let me catch them. Not because I was some awesome master catcher (I was an above average college player) but I knew their stuff and they felt more comfortable with how I called a game. WE were on the same page.

Good luck with everything!
Playing the position catcher and being good physichally at it is only half of it. Iv'e learned the hard way. Playing catcher and being a catcher is 2 different things. You absolutely have to be the smartest player on your team. To be a great catcher you must be the smartest player in your area. You have to convince not only your coach that you are the best for the job, but your pitching staff and the other players on the team too. They need to think and say that they couldn't imagine anybody else behind the plate. Catchers are the invisible glue that keeps everything together. ALWAYS HUSTLE !!! You need to make baseball easy for everybody else, plus your coach. You need to be like your coach's assistant on the field. You'll always see something he won't. When you fix the mistake in the few seconds you have. He will see that and you'll earn trust. Work hard all the time and never let down. Workhard in and before practice everyday in and out.
Good Luck !!!
Also hit the weights hardcore !!! and watch MLB or College games on TV and watch everymove the catcher makes. It's helped me tremendously and a personal trainer or catcher clinic isn't a bad idea either !!!
