To verbally commit or not? Help!

In my opinion, the only reason to commit to a school is if this is the school that your son wants to attend. If baseball was not part of the equation, would he go to this school? If yes, commit; if no, you better understand the risk you are taking by committing.

Great offers aside, your son needs to find a school where he will find success and happiness in the classroom, socially as well as being part of a baseball program.

Ask for time to consider.

Do your homework on the program and the school. Visit in person.

And do the same with other schools of interest, perhaps closer to home.

If being closer to home is what matters to your son, then this is not the right fit for him.

If you stick with the process, he may well land another offer of similar magnitude from a program he prefers.

But, if he continues to look into things, he may well find that he likes this place enough to travel further from home than he expected when he first started the process. So don't toss that offer in the waste bin just yet.

There is a lot to be said for going somewhere where they have shown you are wanted. And one thing about the partial scholarships of college baseball, you can tell who wants you the most according to which ones put their money where their mouths are.

The one thing I can tell from your post is, your son is not ready to commit just yet. But the offer may not be there forever, so he needs to get busy on doing his homework.

Bizzimom@BAT, Midlo Dad is right in saying that the offer may not be there forever. Oftentimes, the larger programs jump on their top prospects quickly with offers and want decisions fairly soon after that so they can move on to Plan B if their first choice declines. It would be wise to visit the school in person right away to see if it would be a good fit.

You mention that other schools have expressed interest in your son. If he is interested in one or more of these programs, it would behoove him to contact these schools and let them know that he already has an offer from another program. It may prompt them to speed things up with an offer for your son.
