Under Fed rules if a coach is caught with a can of dip in his back pocket but not in his mouth - should he be ejected?

Last season my pitching coach had a can in his back pocket and made a trip to the mound. The plate ump caught him as he was coming back to the dugout and talked to him about it. Well he did toss him although we did figure out the plate ump only knew because the other team told him. My coach had made 3 or 4 trips during the game already but got caught on the last one.

I'm not faulting the ump but what the other team did tick me off since they were winning.

Anyway my question - tonight after practice a member of our community who refs football was exercising and he stopped to talk to us. We ended up discussing this becuase my coach has to sit out our first game since he was tossed in our last game. The football ref thought it was only for use of tobacco products and not possession.

He did not have a dip in but just had the can in his pocket.

I thought you couldn't have tobacco products PERIOD but what this ref said started us thinking that maybe an adult could have it but not use it.

We just want to make sure what it is. We tell the players if they get caught period with it then they get tossed and if they do then they have to sit out another 3 games for us for being stupid enough to get caught.

Wow - so basically we got shafted on this because my coach offered to get rid of it when he got to the dugout but the ump said no?

Now what do you think the chances of my coach not sitting out a game if I went to the head of our state governing body? He hasn't had a chance to sit out since it was our last game of the season and our first game is Monday.

Is that the same ruling for a player with tobacco?

Thanks a bunch Dash.
You should have checked this out after last season, if you had a Q on the ruling. I'm sure the state has paperwork from the umpire on this situation, but having them overturn something from last season with your 1st game in about 3 days(and over Easter wkend) makes it seem pointless.
Maybe your coach could learn a lesson about appearances, carrying a dip in his pocket may not be against the rules, per se, but still a bad example to players. And dont blame the other team. The umpire was wrong, but your coach should shoulder some of the blame for this sitch.

You are completely correct archangel in everything you said. We were just wondering after the football ref mentioned it. I know in Kentucky there is no kind of protest or appeal process (which is probably how most or all states handle ejections). If you don't like the outcome or the fact you got tossed then it's tough. So I doubt anything would be done.

We are using this as a learning process because we told our guys that when you think someone isn't looking you are wrong and that someone is looking at all times.

It isn't the other team's fault but they are our chief rival and it was in the playoffs. We beat them twice in the regular season and we had to play them in the first round of playoffs. Their pitcher had an unbelievable day in pitching so we were a little ticked at them.

I realize you are here with an agenda but even you can't believe this. I am a smoker and do not smoke for the duration of a game. Tobacco use has no place in the dugout by kids or coaches. If you are trying to make a joke, try denoting that in your post.

Excuse me, Mr. Taylor. Is it illegal to chaw down? And what in the course of life does a bit in between cheek and gum do when kids see it daily in magazines and many other sources inc MLB! I did not mention smoking which is an abhorrent practice which contaminates and kills everyone around it. I QUIT smoking, Sir, as you well might yourself.

Mr. Taylor, I respect you and your posts but please, put NO words in my tobacco filled mouth.

No it not illegal but it is against the rules. Leave it in the truck and there won't be any problems.
Also, have you never been to a MiLB game? It is against the rules in these games. If they don't enforce the rule and they get caught, they are suspended.

Would calling MiLB ball meet your criteria?

Flash; reality. Tobacco usage is all over MiLB fields.
