You guys have been great with advice so I figured I'd post and ask for some guidance. My son, a senior, (late bloomer..over 6ft. now) reached out to one of the schools he applied to (still waiting to hear about acceptance)because they will be graduating 6 of their pitchers.  Coach called him and told him to come to their "camp" in early Feb. He went. There were about 100 kids there and other school coaches present.  He did great and the coach told him they ALL really liked what they saw and would be in touch.  He hasn't heard a word since then.  He's emailed the coach, who was quick to respond to him before, but he has not gotten back to him.  Was this just a money grab?  Should he keep emailing or calling? Is all hope lost?

To answer your subject line...No.  I didn't sign until 3 weeks after my senior season.  I'm sure others have signed later.  So, there is still time.  As for that specific school, it sounds like they're not interested anymore (or never were and just trying to get that money).  But keep doing your thing and BALL OUT  this season.  You still have time to make something happen!

"Was this just a money grab?" Nearly all camps are intended to earn money, but that doesn't mean the coaches don't look with interest at the players who attend.  It is hard to stand out in a crowd as big as you describe.

"Should he keep emailing or calling?" Absolutely.  Continue communicating until he gets a definitive statement of where he stands.

"Is all hope lost?"  No. At worst, this particular school is not an option.  That doesn't mean he won't still find an opportunity.  It does mean, however, that he needs to expand his horizons.  He should be looking to identify other schools that are good academic fits and plausible baseball fits and haven't reached their application deadlines.

A couple months ago, you said some local schools were interested but that your son wanted to go away to college. Are those options still viable? How important is baseball compared to his desire to go away to school? How important is D1 to him?

Best wishes,

What does He did great mean?

what are some of his numbers, velocity, types of pitches, etc. was this an indoor camp or did they play real games?  Usu if coaches are interested they talk w you at camp and say they want to come watch you in games.

Has son been working w HS or travel coach to get help with any connections they may have?  Is he looking at schools w correct level as his skills?

There are a lot of moving parts in a college program's recruiting scenario. They could be genuinely interested in your son; but, hung up with scarce dollars remaining in the scholarship pool and/or a cloudy picture of who's to be counted upon as part of the class of 2015-16 (both new and returning). This, however, doesn't mean that they shouldn't let your son know that if it is, in fact, the case, Unless...

...they find themselves in a quiet period right now. I believe my son (who is a coach) mentioned to me recently that they're in a quiet period until March 1st. Because they're held on campus, camps are excluded from quiet periods.

In any case, Swampboy has given you his usual excellent advice. I'd go with it.

Best of luck to your son!

Division I coaches are in a Quiet Period through the end of February.  However, that only means that they're not allowed to be involved in off-campus recruiting activities.  It has no effect on their ability to call or e-mail prospects.

They enter a "contact period" on March 1, which will permit them to watch games and/or have face-to-face contact with prospects off-campus.

Thanks for responding. To answer a few questions...

Before he went to the camp, his varsity coach called them to inquire and they said there were losing 6 pitchers and were interested in a left handed pitchers and wanted to see his FORM.  They said due to the time of year and current temps/weather on the East coast right now, they understand that many  (if not all pitchers) should be "shut down" and that was why they just wanted to see FORM.

The camp was originally supposed to be outside, but got moved off campus to an indoor facility due to weather and field maintenance at the school.

Each pitcher was to pitch to 5 batters.  They asked my son to do an extra 5.  He struck out 8 out of 10. He had a high of 84, but was at 80 for most of them. The coach spoke to my husband and son and said they all liked what they saw and "everyone wrote great things about him and would be in touch."

Was this a D1 school?

I would say take an honest look at your son and figure out where he fits as a college pitcher. By this is he a D1, D2, or D3 or maybe even a JUCO pitcher. Once you make this decision, have your son start emailing coaches at those schools. Email them every week. With updates on how he did in his games that week. The good and the bad. Continue this even if they don't reply. Someone will see he wants to play college ball and check up on him with his his coaches, which thier contact information should be included in the email.

Good Luck
