BTW,
My own son was ranked in the top 10 nationally by PG BEFORE he ever paid to attend even one PG event. And truth be told, he only ever paid for one.
He did, however, play in a few WWBA events before getting ranked, and more afterwards -- as a member of a team. The team paid an entry fee, but my son did not. The team raised money by sponsoring tournaments. My son worked the concession stands at those tournaments as his share of the burden.
We probably could have afforded to pay. But I am not what you call loose with money. We also stayed in places like Studio 6 and Extended Stay America while others went more posh. I prefer to teach my kids about how to handle their money.
The scholarship my son has now would pay for quite a few PG showcases per year.
When people tell me they cannot afford this, I roll my eyes. Excuses, excuses.

May I ask what you have against showcases and travel/showcase teams?
You certainly seem to have a vendetta going if I am reading your posts correctly
Sorry ... your perception is wrong about me having a vendetta.
Why is it wrong by sharing information with others of the experiences that others had going a different route?
Why is your way the only way? That is the perception that I see that seems pretty evident.
Why is it wrong by sharing information on how players and parents can do things for very little out of pocket money?
Why do you guys always want to criticize someone else's opinion?
Why are you guys so darn defensive?
Finally,
I will remind every 2011 player out there that the new Virginia Cardinals team is financially sponsored. In addition to several other tournaments this summer, we will be at East Cobb for the WWBA 17u week. There is no player participation fee. Hotel and van transportation is provided. All you will need is meal money. And you'd need that even if you stayed home.
All you have to be is good enough to make the team.
Are we done making excuses now? Are we done claiming that the ranking lists are just a bunch of rich kids?
It ain't so, it hasn't ever been so, and if you miss out this year it's your own darned fault and no one else's.

It's not being defensive. It's frustration that people continue to purvey a fiction to the detriment of kids who buy what you're saying.
I am glad there is Legion baseball. I am glad you do what you do. But please stop telling kids they can get where they want to be by playing Legion ball. The numbers don't lie. Yes, it can happen, it's just that the probability goes way, way down.
Midlo,
Please, you know that the virginia cardinals, no expenses to the player/parents is not the norm for
a showcase team. Showcase teams aren't for the rich only. They are also for those racking up huge credit
card bills for the week in Marietta, Ga, the multiple weekends in hotels, the team fees. It is worth it if the player is talented but for many of those that may get just a few innings to play, and on a team that no scout will waste their time watching, it's money wasted. This has been rehashed over and over. It's a personal choice, a gamble and most won't know if it was the right one until after your kid graduates from HS.

I would like to respectfully agree and disagree with a few points being made:
I agree with the comment that it would be great if this post reverted back to the original discussion point ... what are posters opinions of some of the top 2011 High School players in the State of VA.
I also agree that these horses of "you have to pay to be seen" ... "you have to play showcase ball" ... "Billy Bob made it another way" ... etc ... have been whipped to death and beyond.
I disagree with the mindset that playing travel/showcase/legion or whatever type of baseball is an "investment" that may or may not be "returned" with shcolarship money. The question keeps coming back ... "Is it worth it?"
Questions: Are those piano lessons worth it? Are those dance lessons worth it? Are those beach trips worth it?
Isn't this about kids finding something they are passionate about, and families making the choices that fit their values and resources to allow their kids to chase their dreams ... and see just how far the dream can take them? I'm the first to admit, our family has spent more time & money running around the country allowing our son to chase his baseball dreams than I ever would have imagined possible just a few short years ago. That has been our choice.
The experiences my son has enjoyed, and our family has enjoyed together, have paid off handsomely in memories, life lessons, and great friendships. Time will tell if the time and money spent might help contribute to SP_son having the opportunity to continue chasing his dream at the collegiate level.
All I know for certain is that SP_son is a better person, a better student, a better teammate, and a better ball player for all these experiences. That is a pretty good return on investment in my book ... even if he never makes the list of the top players in the State. But I do enjoy reading about those boys y'all think belong on such a list ... so please keep them coming.

Great post SP. I think that will end the debate on showcasing and get everyone back to the OPINION listing of top 2011 players in the state.
there is some truth that if you want to go to a VA college and are good enough you will be found....look at those 4 Manchester kids that are VCU bound.... I am guessing VCU saw what they wanted to see on high school and AL fields
For those that want to talk about the correct way to get noticed, start another forum post entitled "MY WAY IS BETTER THAN YOUR WAY"
I simply put this together to see if we could have a healthy discussion on who some of the top juniors are in the state. It started off great and went down quickly.

I would expect you will hear alot this yr about the Juniors at Ocean Lakes.
P-Sean Morimando, SS-Alex Lambert, 3B-Killian Strenn and C-Casey Bryant.
I could be mistaken but I don't think I am, so far they form a pretty strong group.

I usually enjoy reading these threads about who the best players are. When I see a name I don't recognize, I check our database. If he is not in the database, we check with our contacts in that area. We have hundreds of contacts and we also get information from college recruiters and MLB scouts. If everyone says he is talented we send one of our people to see him.
If the player turns out to be for real, we get his contact information and invite him to our events. If he is talented enough we enter him into the rankings before he ever attends or doesn't attend a PG event.
Coach Milburn,
I'm sorry you feel the way you do. I would like to invite you to Georgia this July and see for yourself what goes on. Not saying it will change your mind about things, but I do believe you will have a better understanding.
It isn't always necessary to play travel ball or showcases. But it is important that those who make decisions know who you are. If we know of a talented player, whether he plays or not in showcases or big tournaments, the whole world of baseball decision makers knows that players name. How could that be a bad thing?
The player you mention might have been a late bloomer, but it sure would be interesting to know what would have happened had we seen him or even knew about him while he was in high school. Not saying it would have turned out much differently, but we will never know.
Finally, I believe people should do what they think is best. If they think it is best to save their money and stay home, I'm good with that. It could even work out fine for them. However that is not the route that "nearly" every top prospect over the past 10 years from Virginia has taken. I'm kind of surprised that you don't know that. It is fairly easy to research.
You're welcome to have your opinion, but why get upset when others don't share that opinion. If your major interest is saving people money, why not talk about equipment prices, or other things that pertain to savings? Why not talk about investments or Toyotas? It does seem that there is something much more important on your part. I apologize if I'm wrong, but I don't know very many people who post on a public forum telling people how they should spend their money. I for one, really don't care what anyone on here decides to purchase today. Do you?

... or a combination.
It's not that college recruiting coaches don't come to some HS games. They do.
But often they come to get repeat looks at players they've already identified. They don't just show up prospecting. That's too inefficient. I mean, think of it from their perspective. How many games can they really get to, at a time when their own teams are playing 4-5 times/week? And how on earth would they justify going to a game where they didn't know anyone?
The best thing a player can do is get himself on a team that has the talent to attract scouts. Then he himself can also get noticed. The best way to make this happen is to get on a strong travel team. As noted, the Manchester guys frequently did.
The fact that they had a MLB draft prospect on their team last year, and that they also started 18-0 last year and were ranked # 1 in the state, lets them get guys out to watch them in a way that other teams can't match. Not to mention that of all the Legion teams out there, Post 137 has had a very strong run using many of these same players over the last two summers.
As I said above, you don't always have to do travel to get noticed. It is possible to get recruited without it. It's just that, if you're really talented enough, traveling will increase the odds of your not getting overlooked tremendously. Plus, even if someone notices you locally, what if you might have preferred to have options? What if someone else, had they known about you, might've offered you more money, a better opportunity, a better academic fit?
Getting one opportunity is nice. Having your pick from multiple options is where you really want to be. The kids on the PG 2011 VA list have options. Look where they're going.

This discussion certainly did take a turn.
If you go back to the original question asked it seems to be aimed and what people personally think about players they may have seen that are good in their area.
Kind of like a bunch of guys sitting around talking.
One person...who probably had no names to add or knowledge enough to participate in the discussion decides to point out there is no point in asking the question. "Its futile"
Not lonk after that someone decides to paste who PG says are the best.
Maybe if everyone just responded to what is asked and throw out some names we would avoid all the PG-Baseball Clearing House discussion....I mean I am sure all of us can go to these websites and read those lists and know who is listed...and we all know there are guys not on it because maybe for whatever reason they did not participate with some of those organizations.
If we were sitting face to face and the question was ask would someone say "hold on let me go get my PG list"? or would someone say "that sure is a waste of time question"
I personally think it is more interesting and less controversial to draw from what you have personally seen than who is on this or that list and who played on this or that team.....all that info can be retrieved quite easily without even asking or talking to each other

And shortly after that a guy says "I know someone who would be at the top of the list but I'm not telling." at least posting the PG list contributed something. I, and many others on baseball, value and trust their opinion. They see more players per year than any other entity. To discount their input is just plain ignorant.
Point is no one asked for their input...the topic was "who do you think..?" not "what website can I go to...?"
No one who is interested enough in VA high school baseball to sign up and go in a discussion like this needs somone to copy and paste PGs top 500 players
Still havent seen many who posted on the thread actually name players they have seen and in their opinion are potential prospects
Midlo Dad wrote some big long wind bag opinionated response....but still did not respond to the thread

I share the same opinion as PG on the players they mentioned. That's why I reposted it. BTW, it would be nice to see you contribute something.

A professional baseball scouting and evaluation service posts information, knowledge and experience with the only agenda of helping players get to the next level and you criticize them. Unbelievable.
Sounds to me like "my name is not on a list = wounded ego"
I'll never understand why some on this board attack various lists instead of working hard to join them on it.

Well I was the one who started the topic and I liked the fact that I got to see the list. It shows me a list of players, one or two that I did not know of, who are SOME of the best in the state.
If you have players that you think should also be included in this conversation then pass them on.
Word is out on Shaun Wood of Yorktown High School, Arlington, VA as a top pro and college prospect. He is 6'5" and 220 lbs and just made the top 16 in the Commonwealth Games to be played July 9-11 for the Northern Region. Overall, it's the top 80 2011's in the state of VA. In making that team, he went 5-6 in tryout games vs best pitchers in VA including a grand slam and another 400+ foot HR. He hit .521 on the year with over 30 RBIs and multiple HRs as a class of 2011. Shaun has already hit 5 long HRs this summer, including at JMU showcase and Richmond "draftable" showcase in the last few weeks. He is certainly one of the top 17-year old baseball players in the state and beyond.

so all the Best pitchers in VA were at the Nothern Region tryout?

Not so sure that is an accurate statement. 1. There are 2012s who play in the Commonwealth Games. 2. Any high school player who has already committed to a college is not permitted to play. I would think that at least some of those 2011s who have committed would be in the top 80 of the 2011 class. 3. MANY of the 2011s will be at the 17U WWB in Atlantic/East Cobb (e.g., the Perfect Game web sites lists: Canes, Mid-Atlantic Mustangs, Orioles Scout team, Patriots of NOVA Blue, Patriots of NOVA Red, 2 teams Richmond Braves, Virginia Barnstormers, Virginia Cardinals, and Virginia Diamonds.) aw, guys....give a dad a break.
Some very good points have been made here, but having seen Shaun Wood play quite a bit I certainly agree that he's an excellent hitter. He's also on a tremendous upswing in his game, particularly his hitting, He had a much better season in his first year on varsity than he did as a sophomore on JV. If he keeps working and improving like that (and his early summer results make it sound like he is) Doug W's assessment of his standing may prove correct.
Not taking anything away from a kid either... lots of 2011's out there that are good ball players- talent is certainly spread out with all the competition for players among the various travel teams and more traditional options.
Not sure the part about Jrs who have verbally committed not being eligible for tournament is true- i have seen a few on rosters who I know have.
This is an exciting Summer for lots of kids who have worked soo hard for so long to get their chance

Statement is "Restrictions: Players must not be playing in the Virginia High School League All-Star Game for graduating seniors. Players must not be committeed to a College or University."
Stilllearning, how else would you interpret the above statement from the Coventry Commonwealth Games site on baseball? Seems like the committed players on the rosters would be breaking the rule.
I like our Virginia Cardinals guys, of course, but there is one guy who has to be included in any discussion of the state's very best players.
Everyone who sees our team play comes away asking, who is that guy at 2B?
His name is Josh Gardiner, and he was AA All State this year at Eastern View (Culpeper area). He's fast, he's a premium defender, he's an extremely aggressive hitter with surprising power. He even earned 2 saves for us this past weekend, to go with his game winning grand slam, his steal of home, and his several other extra-base hits, diving plays and DP's turned.
I can't speak for the entire state, but if there is a better 2B prospect in the state I'd like to see him.

Son's 2011 team (NVTBL Stars) had a pretty good weekend at the D1 Draftable tournament in Richmond this weekend going 6-0. Not sure who the best 2011 player on the team is but am sure some would qualify as contenders.
That is a very talented, athletic and deep team. The names of their players were not familiar to me, so it's hard for me to remember them, but they sure had some muscular mashers in the lineup. They were also very sharp on defense and the pitcher we saw smartly focused on throwing strikes and using his defense very effectively.
What position does your son play? Did we see him this morning?

I wasn't down there but I think he played RF and SS during that game.

Sure, wasn't implying otherwise but mostly 2011's playing in the Commonwealth Games. Not many 16-year olds will be picked at all.

Actually, not really excessive - the kid has size at 6'5"/220 lbs, swing and overall skills and no one else hit 2 HRs and nor went 5-6 against some of the best pitchers in the state (morning or afternoon). Shaun Wood was one of 8 first-baseman considered for the team and only one chosen for a reason. The kid can outright mash a baseball consistently with prodigious power and has been told he'll be drafted highly next year. None of that is overstated and he should be on college coaches and scouts' radar screens if not already. That's all.
Doug W. Being that he is on the North Team, I hope he hits half a dozen homers in Salem and my kid's on base when he does.

Ha, hey I hope they are knocking each other around the bases. Shaun's not my kid, but who is yours? Does North team have any chance vs other regions?
