CSU Fullerton coach Rick Vanderhook, who seems highly respected, was notified he is suspended  yesterday, just before his team left to play #3, Cal Poly SLO.

Maybe it is just a coincidence but the action by the AD occurred not long after the Head Coach blasted his team for a lack of leadership and accountability in an ESPN interview.

"Q. Talk about the leadership on the team."

"A. There is none."

Rumors are swirling on a Big West message board as to the nature and source of the complaint to the AD coming from a parent who would have plenty of clout.

I would hope its not a response to one article. Without a doubt - he blasted the team and not sure how I would feel if I was on the team but it is his team and he has been a highly respected coach for a long time.

Cal State was ranked #1 going into season by a lot of publications - I am sure it has been a very frustrating season for everyone associated with the team.

More often than not, I tend to side with the coach in a situation such as this one...and, it's obvious that there's a great deal here that none of us can know.

However, based solely upon Coach Vanderhook's recent post-game comments, I can't help but be critical. He's got a lot of negative things to say about individual players, and he calls them by name. However, not once did I hear him suggest that he and/or other coaches might share some responsibility for the team's relatively poor results.

Coach, you recruited them; and, it's your job to make them better once they're there. If they're not playing up to your standards and expectations, recognize and acknowledge that it's a shared responsibility.

If you're inclined to throw your players under the bus, you'd best find a way to get under there with them...and then figure out how to get everyone back inside the cabin's more comfortable confines.
