Not much of a baseball player (football was my game), but since you guys obviously know your stuff I thought I would post here and ask.

I saw a guy at the park, with a beat up old wooden bat and a bucket of scruffy looking baseballs, tossing himself balls at home plate and hitting them deep.

He was probably in his late 30s, average size. Looked like a regular joe except for his swing. I watched for about 5-10 minutes and paced off some of his deepest shots afterwards.

What would you guys consider an average/good/outstanding carry distance under these circumstances? Like I said, average sized guy, late 30s, wood bat, no wind at all. Just tossing them to himself and letting 'er rip.

When I grew up, we were all adept at hitting fly balls from the daily practice we got "out in the back field." You only needed two guys to play what we called "Indian ball" which was our favorite hitting/fielding game. I'm much older than 30 and can still easily hit them out (without a fungo) when hitting fly balls to the outfielders (when I'm showing off).

No such thing though as an average distance, depends on how refined his mechanics are, and primarily, how much bat speed he is producing!! A skilled practioner, tosses the ball just above should height and from that angle, can produce back spin very consistently resulting in some real "rain-makers." I am amazed at the number of players now, who have never learned the skill!!!!

Joe,

One of the best 'traditional' hitting drill.
I have been calling this self toss, since the
early 60's. Should the 'pitcher' have trouble with the self toss, a tee is used until the toss is practiced.

Another that comes to mind is self launching
bat drill.

I recall having a contest at DC Stadium on who could hit the ball from the self toss from the hand with a reg wood bat into the OF Budweiser sign.

cheers

I wouldn't at all be surprised to see one of us "old dudes" hammering fly balls to the nether lands. What does surprise me though is not finding any youth players that have EVER spent time just throwing a ball up and hitting it! The other old baseball skill that I don't see much with today's player, is good "Pepper" skills!

Since MLB players no longer take infield practice, don't play pepper, does pre-game BP get eliminated next?
