Are total bases more than the base you initially reach after a hit? Or do they accumulate as you make your way around the basepath? In other words if you hit a single, then steal 2nd is that one total base or two? I thought it was 2...

Total bases are the bases reached based on a ball put in play.

If you hit a single, it's 1 (even if you steal the next three). If you hit a double, it's 2, triple, 3, HR 4

Total bases are used to compute slugging percentage, which then becomes part of the OBS (on base + slugging percentage) stat that has become very popular in baseaball.

I've seen this used by runners to help out the scorekeeper...

As the runner crosses a base he picks it up, adds it to the wheeled rack, and then brings it over to the guy with the book to sort it all out. Slows the game down a bit, but eliminates confusion.
