I had been through the recruiting process for awhile and a couple months ago I had decided I was just going to pursue my academics in college.(I am on 07 grad). The school I'm going to in the fall is in the SEC and is a well respected program. However I have seen my velocity rise and I am consistantly hitting 87-88 and I have gotten down a splitter that really baffles hitters. I feel like I'm just hitting my stride right now. I plan on trying to walk on in a few months, but I'm afraid I won't make the team. Am I just overthinking things, or should I continue to maybe pursue baseball with the background of having my school of choice in the fall to fall back on? My last 3 outings have been 2 Complete game shutouts, 15 K's between the two games. And my last start was 6 innings with 1 unearned run. This is summer ball against some quality teams.

My concern with your situation can be summed up in the form of a question.. where does your heart lie?

Baseball is a tough sport physically and mentally, and I would say unless you have a burning desire to compete at the highest level, to rough out the inconveniences and hard work it takes to get there, give it up. Hang up your cleats.

There is no right or wrong answer to your question, from the perspective of a third party. The answer to your question lies within yourself. What does your heart say? Would you be comfortable 20 years from now wondering, what if? Are you perhaps afraid you can't compete at the highest level either now or in the future? It should be obvious to you that to achieve a dream you must first believe. If you believe, then it is just a matter of developing a plan and following that plan.

Do you believe?

If not, there is no shame in moving on. In fact, you may be better off dropping the baseball and concentrating on the academics. I don't know. But you do.
I agree with BUM and Beenthere.

Just thought I would ask if you have talked to the SEC coach?

If not you need to go talk to the SEC coach. Give him some references he can call like your HS coach, but be sure the HS coach is your advocate. Also tell the SEC coach about your summer team schedule. Invite him to call your summer coach to verify when you are pitching.

Tell the SEC coach of your plans to try to walk on this year.

I believe the more you talk to the coach now the better, at least he will know your name at the try-outs!
