....today, according to The Baltimore Sun, Baltimore Business Journal and Towerlight (school paper) baseball and men's s****r will soon be history at Towson. Handwriting's been on the wall for a while now and the Tige's have never really been serious about baseball as evidenced by their lack of funding for coaches and scholarships. Probably for the best...

In fact, none of the local football playing universities (Towson, Delaware, U of MD) sponsoring both baseball/men's lax have been able to afford becoming contenders in baseball, as Title IX compliance doesn't coexist well with an 'additional' Spring sport. Wonder who'll be next up?

Lax is a good fit at Richmond because the sport is well entrenched within the 1% class, and this may be little Johnny's only shot to be a "D1 athlete", albeit on a mediocre start-up team.

At 55K per year and the prospect of adding 30-35 "players" to the roster, UR adds $5.5 million in tuition /fees revenue over the four year life of a men's lax team, and that includes those on scholarship, probably 4-5 spread around, and those who need more than four to graduate.

S****r and T & F athletes apparently don't come from the "means" to be able to give the Spiders more cash like the Lax offspring of wealthy.

Pricey D3 private colleges have been playing this game for years, it costs less than many programs to run (see baseball) boosts revenue and increases male enrollment at a time when both figures are down. Unfortunately its all about the bucks.

And it really is a shame that Towson drops baseball, but without the Schuerholz donation and field improvements (such that they were) the program would likely have been nixed long ago. The program was always run on a shoestring budget and while a big disappointment to current players, there are good players there who should be able to find new schools. Hopefully, the better players will find schools invested in winning baseball. Who knows, t might be the best thing that ever happened to those particular players!

This fight is not over...grass roots efforts are taking place to try and save the program...Banner "Save TU Baseball" flown overhead at Raven's game, stategically place signs a O's game and Raven football game making the local new and newspapers....Wish them luck they are not going down without a fight!
