For those of you whose son decided to transfer to play at another school for whatever reason, at what point did you finally know that it was time to make the switch? What made you go from thinking about doing it to actually following through and making a change?

From other people's experiences it was ...
1) Kid saw he was in over his head.
2) Kid didn't see an avenue to the field based on depth chart.
3) Coach told the kid he didn't want him on the team next year or told him no more scholarship (same thing unless your a senior starter).
Thinking about it occurs when you see it. Knowing is when you see confirmation. If you're not getting in 20-0 home game blowouts, guess what!

Most important point about transfering. What you gained this year might be lost.
Having recently been through this, it's important to make sure you don't spend so much time pondering the question of whether to transfer that you miss transfer application deadlines. My son was able to transfer to his #1 choice, but there were a couple of other schools of interest where the deadline had already past and the coaches had very little, if any, leverage to get admissions to consider a late application. On the other hand, there were other schools where the coach never even mentioned the transfer application deadline. Am assuming they have more pull to get admissions to look at a late application.
When is the typical transfer deadline for the majority of schools?
Not sure there is a "typical" deadline. In just the handful of schools my son looked at, there was a wide range of dates -- February 1 at the early end and June 1 at the late end. April 1 seemed to be fairly common, but again a wide range.
^^^ I just checked UVA and William & Mary here in VA and the transfer deadline is March 1.
Do you need a release from the coach?
Keewartson's team had a freshman player not return second semester and he is already on a roster and playing at a JuCo.
Razorback, if you are transferring to a federal academy, it may be the same deadlines as a high school senior applying. College confidential has some comments on this.
