If a kid wants to explore dropping down to JUCO in order to transfer to another program, but is not sure that they really want to leave their current program, would it be acceptable to talk to some coaches and maybe throw a pen for them without saying anything to current coach?

My son is transferring down to JuCo and I had conversations with the coach, but we waited until he informed his current coach he wanted to transfer until he actually spoke with the JuCo HC. I'd have reservations playing for a coach who felt comfortable talking to the kid before he had informed his old coach he was leaving.

Any JuCo coach that you were to make contact with would almost certainly call your current coach before he did anything else. Out of courtesy if nothing else. No way to do anything on the down low. Need to stay above board with all of your communication.

Assuming I’m right where he’s transferring .... Isn’t the situation unique given the coach is local and you were an assistant on the high school team?

It's a little different. The current HC at the JC is in his first year from Tarleton St. and he's never met my son. However, there is a certain familiarity there.

Not sure I would use the terminology "transferring down". That makes it sound like a negative. Transfers happen all the time, and in most cases for good reasons. This might just turn out to be a blessing.
Good luck to root jr!
