Hello,

My son is a freshman at a JUCO. I have a question about transferring and eligibility. There were several JC's that were interested in my son during the summer, but my son chose a school close to home. He felt the local school's baseball program was a good fit for him. If for any reason he feels that has changed, what are the rules for transferring and being able to play at another JC in the spring of 2015? Thank you.

Turn 2, sorry you're not getting more help on this one.  CA JC's play in their own league so you will need to get info specific to the CCCAA.

Son transferred from one JC to another but completed the whole year and was redshirted due to injury so the  same rules may not apply.  He didn't have to do anything special from an athletic standpoint.  He had to go through the usual application process and have his transcripts sent over and there was an issue with one or two classes they would not accept.

If he has spoken to a prospective new coach, I would ask him.  Otherwise, I suggest talking to someone in admissions for the prospective new school.  This will allow him to keep things private until he is sure of what he wants to do. I don't believe eligibility is a problem unless he plays in a game but I'm not 100% sure.

Thank you for the replies. I didn't think of calling the admissions office of the prospective school. I will make some calls this week. He did talk to the other coaches during the summer and now they cannot contact him. He has reached out a couple times to keep in touch. One coach told him you can basically do anything your freshman year. My son didn't get more specific details.

So, I am taking it that a student can transfer at the end of the semester and still play for the new school. I will call a couple schools and report back on what I am told for future reference.

FWIW, my son is a very loyal and dedicated kid so, changing would not be easy for him. I just want to stay informed in case we need to entertain a transfer. After all, it is still a business.

Thanks again for the replies.

Turn2, regarding your last question, if we were talking NJCAA rules, that would be true only for a winter sport like basketball that crosses over both semesters.

Also, (and again if this were NJCAA), he would need a Transfer Waiver and meet academic requirements to be eligible at the next school, and would also need a letter of intent release if he had signed a scholarship with the first school.  Perhaps this will at least give you a point of reference.
