To give you the proper answer you have to let people here the following:

1. Were you a recruited athlete.

2. Did you enroll as a full time student.

3. Were you practicing with the team this fall.

4. Are you on scholarship.

 

With those questions answered someone like Rick at informed athlete will be able to answer your questions. Go to the NCAA website and they have information on transferring also. 

RJM is correct. You'll be ineligible for competition during your first academic year (two semesters or three quarters) at the Division I school.  A 4-2-4 transfer, as he mentioned, is an option to avoid the requirement to sit out from competition.

 

In addition, coaches at other NCAA schools can't talk with you about a possible transfer until they receive permission from your current school.  You can learn about the transfer process at www.informedathlete.com.
