Just wondering how the transfer process would work for a freshman player wanting to transfer from at D2 to a D1 program?

To give you the proper answer you have to let people here the following:
1. Were you a recruited athlete.
2. Did you enroll as a full time student.
3. Were you practicing with the team this fall.
4. Are you on scholarship.

I believe he's going to have to sit out a year transferring from D2 to D1. The way around this is transfer D2 to JuCo to D1. There are a couple of people on this site who can describe the solution in detail.
RJM is correct. You'll be ineligible for competition during your first academic year (two semesters or three quarters) at the Division I school. A 4-2-4 transfer, as he mentioned, is an option to avoid the requirement to sit out from competition.
