If I were following my baseball playing son around today I would add a few things to my list that didn’t exist when he was playing travel ball.

GPS:
The first new thing would be a GPS. I have a Garmin Nuvi now that allows me to locate just about anything in a new town and takes the guess work out of finding the different ball parks, hotels, and restaurants. VERY easy to operate. You don’t even have to open up the instructions.

Lap top:
My current lap top is wireless and has a DVD burner. The one I carried when he was playing didn’t have a DVD burner. I would probably get an air card too for remote internet access where high speed is not available. HSBBW in the hotel is nice! You can also have a slide show of yesterday’s game if you take pictures!

Digital Still Camera:
A good quality Digital still camera is essential in my opinion. Baseball is difficult for me to photograph. For me to capture that special action shot I shoot a multiple exposure “burst”. Don’t over complicate yourself here. While I shoot a digital SLR with different lenses, many of the simpler digital cameras take great high definition photographs. If you’re new to digital photography seek advice.

Digital video camera (camcorder):
In the past everything video was basically the old bulky VHS and I even had to even wait until I got home to convert to VHS format. I went through the VHS, VHS-C, High -8, and the beginning stages of digital video during his “travel” years. That was a very frustrating experience. Today I have a 60GB hard drive Sony handycam and another Sony handycam that uses miniDV tapes. I would like to have more bells and whistles but it would be ovekill and both are very easy to operate, fit in a jacket pocket or purse and “dump” to DVD quite easily.

The items I touched on are high tech and are changing daily. Next spring it will be something new. You don’t have to have the “newest gimmicks” to have a rewarding travel experience. There are lots of things that we should consider doing or getting before we start out next spring and summer. Dads tend to focus on a few large items cameras and computers. Some moms are photographers too and easily out tech me but they also are expected to do the hard work of organizing everything from aspirins to extra buttons for the uniforms. I have asked a hundred times for my wife to dig into the big baseball bag she carries for eyeglass cleaner sunglasses, gum, and that always present smuggled bottle of water. Any suggestions?

Don't forget also if you coach as well "the fungoman"- no play on words here! I saw this thing demo yesterday and it is ridiculus! I'm not connected in any way to marketing this thing, but I'll bet you'll be seeing these things around spring training for some mlb teams. I don't know how to provide a link so just google fungoman.
One thing I like to do before going to a new park is to load Google Maps Satelite. I can get an aeriel
view of the facility and see where parking is etc.
This is especially true for High School fields, The GPS will get you to the HS but won't tell you where the Varsity field is. And as most of you know, that field could be anywhere! For me it is a great tool, get a good look at the place before I arrive.

Google Maps and Yahoo maps are very helpful where you can see the area. You can also try, Google Earth is much more detailed, I have used it for families to be able to even to tell what type of seating is available (to know to bring a chair or not) very helpful for schools and other parks.
I have all the toys. Been using a GPS for a couple years and currently have a TomTom 910. It answers my cell phone automatically and reads my text messages to me. Also reads the street names as you turn on to them. I purchased an external ariel for it which really help with finding signals. I use mine several times a day and even have a backup unit just in case.
I also have a wireless Tosiba P20 with a 17" screen and a portable Passport external hard drive to hold those digital photos and videos. Have a total of 1.6 terabites of external storage.
You also don't want to forget the tripod.
Homerun04 is right-on with the GoogleEarth recommendation. It is why Al Gore invented the internet! Here is my current home, off to the right of the picture. I really love to view the terrain from a lower angle and spin or navigate through the mountains. This detail is really unbelievable.

I would rather study a map and GoogleEarth than use a Garmin or other GPS. I understand the enormous value they offer, but I'm old-school and still enjoy the hunt. My California based son needs one for his business, but always brings it east whenever he visits so he can quickly find a Ledo Pizza restaurant whenever and wherever he gets hungry.

Have also used google earth for a couple years and also MS Street & Map.
GPS save marriages. Took a trip to Charleston and Myrtle Beach . My friend drove and I made him use the GPS. He now has one and it cut the tension to nothing on the trip. Took us right to the door step of every destination. Would never give it up.
MS S & M is great for laying trips out but I just use it to find locations and lay out the stops.

Wow! I tell people I live where suburban meets rural. It looks like you live where suburban meets the edge of the world. Is there anything off to the left?

Hand sanitizer. Not a new thing. Just one of the most needed. A mom with a bottle of it is the most popular mom at the field.
I had a travel softball player who could have used your services. She never liked using the porta potties. She would hold it until she had a chance to get to the ladies room between games. One time she couldn't wait. When she came out of the porta potty she said it wasn't as bad as she thought, but the "soap" in the "sink" was a bit coarse. She immediately got a thirteen player chorus of "Oh my God!" This player bolted through the middle of four games directly to the ladies room to scrub her hands. I had always said this kid inhaled too much helium as a child. Her name for the remainder of her time on the team was "Soaps."

She's also popular when she carries, tylenol, suncreen and bug spray. Smile

Us moms are good for somethings! Wink

I began son's college career with the camara and video but found that I was not concentrating on the game (husband won't do that stuff when son on the mound). We had such great parents, we all filmed and took pics for each other, it worked out well. One of the dads took pics of son when we weren't there and then sent them via email.
Some people are so nice.

My son just went GPS in his car and it's so nice not to have to "guide" him by phone to his destination. Our next car is going to have it, we rent cars with it when in a strange city. I find the lady distracting, but it is so cool how you can locate anything.

I do like google earth and managed to get to Omaha by map quest from south carolina and back without a hitch.

This thread is being hijacked...

There are more mountains to the left and pretty much all around the basin. Afghanistan is relatively inhospitable; kinda like the edge of the world.

The view to the left...

I have the Panasonic FZ7 (I'm one of those picture taking moms) and I LOVE it! Sports photography is tough but with this camera I can take great shots in burst mode as well as video clips. Panasonic does not market their products as much as Nikon or Kodak but read the reviews...these are great cameras! My son loves to critique himself and his friends by looking at the stills and video.
